ISIS is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments gives unique insights into the properties of materials on the atomic scale. We support a national and international community of more than 3000 scientists to research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology and materials engineering, catalysis and polymers, and on to fundamental studies of materials.
Software is an essential part of all science at ISIS. The ISIS computing division is a growing area and plays a vital role in supporting the ISIS facility. It provides all the software needs for scientists, and staff. The User Programme Software group provide the web services for proposal management, scheduling experiments and other critical services for our user programmes.

About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities
We have opportunities for a student to join us to help develop new software and web services which run our user and experiment programmes. We are looking for a student who is keen to learn and has potential, and we provide a wide range of training opportunities in an encouraging team atmosphere.
As an Industrial Placement Web Developer with us, you will have opportunities to:
* Be involved in all stages of the software development lifecycle from requirements collection through to design, coding, testing, deployment, support and running high quality production services.
* Work on a range of projects using Agile methodologies with real responsibility and ownership in a supportive environment.
* Write clear, well-structured code that meets requirements and is easy to maintain.
* Take an active role in team meetings.
* Collaborate and solve problems together with colleagues.
* Work with an interdisciplinary team supporting engineers and scientists, who are using ground-breaking technologies to enable science at the facility
Person Specification
The below criteria will be scored during Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I).
Essential:
* Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement (S)
* Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year (S)
* Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S)
* Able to commence employment in summer 2026 (S)
* Strong academic background with very good module grades at university so far(S)
* Good understanding and some experience of object-oriented programming e.g. in Java, C# or similar(S&I)
* Good understanding of relational database theory and SQL(S&I)
* An awareness of software engineering principles, including testing and best practice.(I)
* Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with others and communicate complex information effectively(S&I)
* An ability to take initiative and work effectively with limited supervision at times.(S&I)
