This is a fixed term position for 5 years. We’re excited to offer an incredible opportunity to become an Environmental Health Practitioner. Employed full time by Stoke-on-Trent City Council for a fixed term period of five years,you would be expected to attend the University of Wolverhampton for one day a week to complete a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Health, whilst gaining practical skills and competing a portfolio by working at the council. The apprenticeship course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and would lead to you becoming a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner (REnvH). As a student at the University of Wolverhampton you would have an academic timetable, attending lectures one day a week during termtime. The remainder of the week, and periods outside of term time, would be spent working within the Environmental Health Service at the council, rotating through placements across a range of disciplines, such as food safety, infectious disease, workplace health, safety and well-being, pollution control and housing to develop the knowledge, skills and experiences that will set you up for a successful and exciting, yet demanding career as an environmental health practitioner. Being an environmental health practitioner is a unique and varied job, with no two days the same. You might be inspecting a takeaway business and awarding their food hygiene rating, investigating a workplace accident, attending a funeral that you arranged for someone who died with no relatives, working to contain an outbreak of an infectious disease, licensing a pet shop, visiting a tattooist, responding to a complaint about noisy neighbours, monitoring local air quality, inspecting a rented property to ensure it is free from damp and mould, and so much more. The opportunity might suit people who have recently left education at age 18, those looking for a career change or those already working in a regulatory or enforcement role. If successful, you would report to a Principal Environmental Health Officer and have the support of an apprenticeship assessor/mentor etc. The five years fixed term is made up of the four years qualification route plus a minimum of 12 months guaranteed job upon successful qualification. Key Skills and Experience We are looking for someone with: A minimum of three A levels at grade C or higher, or the equivalent. GCSE English and Maths at grade C or higher, or the equivalent. Experience, in paid or voluntary roles, of providing a service to others, of working in a team, and of independent decision making. Further details can be found in the person specification.
