The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint an outstanding and experienced Head of Clinical Radiotherapy Physics to provide strategic, professional and operational leadership for a highly specialist radiotherapy physics service.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a large expert team delivering safe, innovative and high-quality radiotherapy services across the Trust. The postholder will be responsible for service delivery, governance, workforce leadership, research and innovation, and the continued development of advanced radiotherapy physics practice.

The service supports treatment for more than 5,000 patients each year and includes a wide range of advanced techniques and technologies, including SBRT, IMRT, VMAT, MR-linac, CyberKnife and online adaptive radiotherapy.

We are seeking an experienced HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist with MPE certification, Higher Specialist Scientist registration, and a strong track record of senior leadership within radiotherapy physics. You will bring substantial experience in service development, quality and safety, research, and multidisciplinary working within a complex clinical environment.This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of radiotherapy physics within one of the world's leading cancer centres.


Main duties of the job

To provide strategic, operational and professional leadership and expertise for the Clinical Radiotherapy Physics Group across sites, for the delivery of the service needs and research objectives of the Trust.

Lead and direct the development, coordination and delivery of strategic research programmes to maintain and enhance the Trust's national standing. Provide leadership in influencing and shaping policy at both national and international levels, contributing to the advancement of Medical Physics practice, and ensuring delivery of a world-class radiotherapy service of national and international importance.

* To be overall accountable for the scientific work done by the Clinical Radiotherapy Physics Group.
* Ensure safe and effective use of advanced technologies including MR-linac, CyberKnife, and AI- supported systems
* To provide advice and expertise to users to whom physics services have been contracted.
* To act as Medical Physics Expert, in accordance with the IR(ME)R regulations.
* To represent the Clinical Radiotherapy Physics Group at Divisional meetings.
* To act as line manager for specified post-doctoral and other research staff.
* Participate in professional, national working parties for radiotherapy physics as appropriate


Person Specification


Qualifications

* MSc in radiation Physics (or equivalent)
* PhD in relevant subject (or equivalent)
* Fellowship of IPEM or other equivalent qualifications and experience


Registration

* HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist
* RPA2000 MPE certification
* Higher Specialist Scientist registration


Legislation

* Understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines [e.g. IRR17, IR(ME)R 2017, ISO 9001:2000, and IPEM recommendations)
* Comprehensive understanding of the governance, risks and safety requirements associated with:
* 1. Ionising radiation
* 2. Lasers
* 3. Electrical hazards, including high voltage
* 4. Magnetic fields


Communication

* Able to present scientific abstracts at national and international conferences and publish papers in relevant, peer reviewed journals.
* Able to chair departmental, Trust, national and international meetings and conferences. Able to plan and direct local, national and international scientific or health care meetings
* Able to communicate complex information to staff at all levels within the department and Trust and to senior staff working in other hospitals and institutes.
* Able to train groups of other multi-disciplinary professional staff
* Able to deal with complex and unpredictable situations


IT

* Highly developed understanding of digital systems, data management and informatics relevant to radiotherapy physics services
* Able to set up and manage the acquisition, structure and networking of information, including image transfer formats
* Experience in programming (e.g. in one or more of Python, C++, JAVA, R, MATLAB)
* Detailed understanding of the IT systems used within department
* Understanding of digital innovation, AI applications, and translational research in radiotherapy
* Experience in integrating oncology information systems with the Trusts connect system


Clinical

* Broad and advanced knowledge of the application of medical physics in health care
* Experience in developing business cases for equipment replacement and/or service development
* High level of understanding of clinical requirements and issues and their implications for the work of the cross site radiotherapy clinical service


Scientific / Technical / Specialist

* Substantial senior leadership and management experience within a radiotherapy physics group with responsibilities for both service and research, and of liaising with management at all levels.
* Demonstrable evidence of making an important contribution to the development of his/her area of speciality in terms of contributions to national or international scientific bodies/committees/boards or working parties
* Able to provide first class scientific leadership. Extensive and internationally recognised research and innovation experience with demonstrable evidence of significant scientific contributions in terms of refereed publications, grant funding and translational impact.
* Experience of writing cancer related grant applications in the field of radiotherapy physics
* Extensive senior level theoretical and practical experience of radiotherapy physics
* Extensive and expert knowledge of radiotherapy physics and its practical application in healthcare
* Excellent knowledge and understanding of present standards and methods, legislation and safety requirements (including the use of ionising radiation).
* Substantial experience of implementing online Adaptive Radiotherapy into clinical practice
* Able to innovate, appreciating complex requirements and recognising practical needs


Leadership & Management Skills

* Knowledge of management issues at a high level
* Able to be an effective leader of both senior managers within the department and of all departmental staff.
* Demonstrable experience of strategic leadership and service development within a complex radiotherapy physics service.
* Able to prioritise own work and that of others in response to very demanding and sometimes conflicting situations


Mental & Emotional

* Able to concentrate frequently when subject to unpredictable working patterns.
* Able to concentrate for prolonged periods (e.g. performing lengthy upgrade operations)
* Able to deal with complex and unpredictable situations while maintaining a calm manner and professional standard.
* Able to deal with occasional distressing circumstances (e.g. working with patients having advanced cancer in Radiotherapy)
