About The Role
The Transmission & Distribution division is recruiting a Principal Overhead Line Engineer to be part of an integral team delivering large projects globally. The Principal OHL Engineer provides specialist advice, designs, reports, and input across a portfolio of projects. You will manage and complete design work associated with transmission and distribution line design.
Engineering work includes route selection, PLS-CADD modelling, structural models in PLS-TOWER and PLS-POLE, line schedules, stringing tables and charts, design reports, site verification, drawings, specifications, and design standards. You will coordinate with the wider team to deliver the required outputs. The Principal OHL Engineer should be able to complete complex projects or assignments without supervision and provide technical solutions with little to no precedent.
Responsibilities
* Perform, review and approve High Voltage OHL designs complying with relevant international standards
* Ensure designs approved for delivery comply with relevant legislation, standards, policies and procedures
* Update or create design standards and related documentation to ensure continued compliance to standards and industry best practice
* Manage a team and mentor juniors
* Carry out studies in specialist areas such as line and foundation design, tower spotting, sag-tension, plan and profile, conductor selection, and structural design of lattice towers and poles
* Prepare, review and manage specifications, schedules, BOQs and other design documentation
* Provide information to identify the best approach for complex multidisciplinary projects
* Investigate and implement innovative design solutions to meet business and project needs
* Provide competitive design solutions to support client objectives
* Proficient in engineering software to prepare transmission and distribution line designs including PLS-CADD, PLS-Tower, PLS-Pole
* Deliver projects in accordance with client requirements and industry best practice
* Manage construction activities by contractors and lead project and design review meetings
* Provide technical input into proposals
Candidate Specification
* BSc or Master’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent with relevant experience
* Proficient in writing and reviewing reports
* Extensive experience in an OHL engineering environment, including scheme and project/design management and a proven delivery track record
* Experience in leading a team and mentoring junior staff
* Ability to chair meetings and communicate with project teams, producing reports
* Proficient in leading the preparation, coordination and review of design drawings
* Working knowledge of British and International Standards and Codes of Practice for OHL design
* Prior site-based OHL experience
* Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures for design and specifications
* Knowledge of HSE and CDM regulations; ability to perform risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies
* Experience in Construction Design Studies (CDS) and feasibility studies
* Proficiency in engineering design software including PLS-CADD, PLS-Tower, PLS-Pole, AutoCAD
* Quality assurance processes to ensure design quality
* Ability to promote professionalism, clear communication, and integrity within the design team
* TP141 authorization preferable
* Client-facing, proactive, and able to work well in a team
