Job Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Scientist or Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) Laboratory, at our Blood Centre in Birmingham. Our laboratory carries out testing to support solid organ and transplantations and immunogenetic testing for a variety of conditions.
You will join our friendly team and play an important role performing, analysing and interpreting a wide range of specialist scientific and technical procedures and investigations relating to the issue of results for transplant patients and donors impacting directly on patient care. In addition, you will be involved with the supply of HPA selected platelet units. You will provide advice to clinicians and contributing to the coordination and supervision of the work, training and conduct of scientific and support staff. As a HCPC registered Clinical Scientist or Biomedical Scientist with post registration experience, you will have an MSc or equivalent in transplantation, immunology, transfusion or relevant science or specialist qualification in H&I such as the BSHI Diploma or equivalent relevant experience. Applications will be considered from candidates who are within 6 months of obtaining confirmation of registration.
Main duties of the job
In this role as a HCPC registered Clinical Scientist / Biomedical Scientist within H&I, you will be required to analyse, interpret, validate and report the results of specialist Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics investigations. Your duties will include :-
1. Analysing and performing both molecular and serological based testing in relation to haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, immunogenetic services, -and solid organ transplantation.
2. Communicating specialist results to internal and external clinicians, other healthcare colleagues and scientific staff.
3. Assisting with quality management issues within your section of the laboratory, under the direction of the Clinical Scientist Section Head and Laboratory Operations Manager.
4. Contributing to the coordination and supervision of the work, training and conduct of scientific and support staff.
5. You will be required to participate in 24/7 out of hours on-call rota.
With appropriate training and experience you may be required to provide cover in times of operational difficulty for which notice will be given.
About You
Experience and Knowledge
6. In depth knowledge and expertise in clinical solid organ and/or stem cell transplantation and transfusion science
7. Proficiency in relevant specialised laboratory techniques / environments
8. Experience of working to quality and accreditation systems and standards
9. Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), or equivalent Systems
Qualifications and Training
10. Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Clinical Scientist or Biomedical Scientist (which must be maintained)
11. BSc in Biological/Medical sciences or relevant science degree or equivalent
12. MSc or equivalent in transplantation, immunology, transfusion or relevant science or post graduate qualification e.g.British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (BSHI) Diploma, specialist portfolio, FIBMS OR equivalent relevant experience
