Job summary

We are seeking an experienced part‑time / any 4 days per week Consultant Psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Lodge Woking and provide senior medical cover on George Willard Ward, our 12 bed male mental health acute service.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, oversee and maintain the care of all ward inpatients and audit the medical services rendered at the ward, ensuring quality in accordance with GMC standards and other professional guidelines.

In this role, your expertise will drive life‑changing treatment fully supported by a Specialty Doctor and first‑class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, a psychologist and an occupational therapist.


About Cygnet Lodge Woking

Cygnet Lodge Woking is a 31 bed service providing acute and high‑support inpatient rehabilitation (Level 2) for men with complex mental health needs. The service is supported by a social worker, responsible clinician, ward doctor, psychologist, assistant psychologist, independent advocate, chaplain, practice nurse and assistant, occupational therapist and occupational therapy assistant. All service users are registered with the local GP.


George Willard Ward

A 12 bed male acute ward that provides a safe and stabilising environment for men experiencing an acute episode of mental illness and requiring emergency admission.


Responsibilities

* Lead on the provision of high quality care to the service users admitted to George Willard Ward.
* Act as a positive role model, maintaining a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors and staff.
* Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Assess referrals, undertake mental state examinations of service users.
* Undertake appropriate investigations, diagnosis and treatment.
* Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews and clinical audits.
* Lead the implementation of risk assessment, risk management and embed clinical governance within the service.
* Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and managers hearings, attend hearings.
* Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for patient transfer and approval of leave.
* Maintain patient records.
* Ensure regular communication with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager.
* Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff and other bodies; maintain appropriate reports.
* Attend and contribute to academic meetings and adhere to CPD standards set by the GMC, Department of Health and Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Contribute to the telephone on‑call rota.


Qualifications and Experience

* Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified.
* Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC Status.
* Experienced and knowledgeable in General Adult Psychiatry and mental health diagnosis.
* Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, and the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity.
* Strong communicator able to interview, assess, treat patients and write clear, comprehensive medical notes.
* Committed to continued professional development.
* Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent.

Requirements
