Offer description

This is a pivotal moment for Public Fundraising at the National Trust and an exciting opportunity to help shape what comes next. We’re looking for a Head of Legacy Development to lead delivery of the National Trust’s Legacy Development team, meeting ambitious long‑term growth targets and building on the success of an established, high performing team. You’ll lead and develop a culture where legacies are championed, managing a team of six direct reports, working across the charity to grow awareness of legacy giving, inspire more people to leave a gift in their will, and secure future commitments that will drive long‑term income. This is a strategic, organisation‑wide role with responsibility for legacy marketing, legacy events, high value relationships and legacy donor journeys. You’ll bring strategic clarity, fundraising confidence and a collaborative, inclusive leadership style. If you are excited by complexity, motivated by impact, and energised by bringing people with you through change, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting difference. Salary: circa £60,000 depending on experience. What it's like to work here Reporting to the Head of Public Fundraising, you’ll be part of a positive, ambitious, and forward-thinking Public Fundraising Leadership Team. Together, we’re on a journey to grow fundraising in a more joined up, audience led and impact focused way – building trust, simplifying how we work and creating the conditions for everyone to contribute to success. Building on the success of our first DRTV campaign earlier this year, you’ll work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation, including teams on our properties, to lay out the future direction for legacy growth. You’ll help connect priorities, unlock opportunities and build confidence in how we grow our legacy pipeline and inspire supporters, both within our membership and beyond. We value collaboration, curiosity and learning, and we’re committed to an inclusive culture where different perspectives are welcomed and people feel supported to do their best work. As this is a national role, there is flexibility on your contractual place of work. Our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40–60% of your working week. What you'll be doing You’ll lead and evolve our organisation wide approach to legacy development, setting a clear strategic direction and building the capability, culture and confidence needed to deliver sustainable long‑term growth. Working closely with the Heads of Legacy Administration, Individual Giving and Major Gifts, you’ll develop and deliver a cohesive legacy strategy, balancing volume and value, with a strong focus on inspiring and retaining donor relationships at all levels. Using deep insight into legacy development and supporter behaviour, you’ll shape an integrated marketing and engagement plan across DRTV, out‑of‑home, paid media, events, on‑property promotion and end‑to‑end donor journeys, ensuring alignment with the Trust’s strategic priorities. You’ll operate confidently at all levels, bringing credibility, warmth and clarity to conversations with internal stakeholders and donors alike. You’ll champion open, collaborative and outward looking ways of working; simplifying processes, strengthening cross‑organisation collaboration and embedding a culture that values learning, innovation and external insight. As a member of the Public Fundraising Leadership Team, you’ll help drive transformation and positive culture change across the whole function, not just legacy fundraising. Who we're looking for We’re looking for a strategic, values led leader with a background in Legacy Marketing and supporter journeys. You’ll bring; Deep expertise in legacy fundraising, including marketing and donor journeys, with a proven ability to build strong internal relationships across complex organisations Experience developing a legacy aware fundraising culture, increasing understanding and confidence among internal stakeholders and driving professional excellence A strong understanding of legacy audiences, donor engagement and high‑value legacy stewardship Proven financial leadership, including managing seven‑figure budgets, making sound investment decisions and holding teams to account with clarity and confidence Experience developing and delivering legacy strategies informed by audience insight, data analysis and external trends Experience leading and developing diverse teams, coaching through change and influencing across organisations Experience growing legacy prospect pipelines, including setting and reporting against clear KPIs and performance measures Knowledge of, or experience working within, the Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Practice and ethical fundraising best practice Above all, you’ll be someone who brings people with you – collaborative, credible, thoughtful and engaging – to continue to grow the National trust legacy programme. The package The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too. Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary Free entry to National Trust places for you, a guest and your children (under 18) Rental deposit loan scheme Season ticket loan EV car lease scheme (for roles that meet the salary criteria) Perks at work discounts such as gym memberships, shopping discount codes, cinema discounts Holiday allowance up to 32 days relating to length of service, plus holiday purchase scheme, subject to meeting minimum criteria. Flexible working whenever possible Employee assistance programme Free parking at most Trust places
