A large public sector organisation is currently recruiting for up to 6 Management Accountants on a permanent basis
Based in London, the role will be offered hybrid with 3 days attendance per week. They have some excellent benefits including 28.97% employers pension (APLHA) contribution and 28 days annual leave + bank holidays (rising to 33 days after 5 years' service)
Ideally you would be a
CCAB qualified accountant
(ACCA/CIMA/ACA/CIPFA). Previous experience in the public sector will be valuable but by no means essential.
As a member of their Finance team, you'll play a central role in delivering customer-focused, finance services. You'll help strike the balance between rigorous financial control and a strategic, forward-looking mindset—working across their team to ensure every decision drives the business forward.
You'll provide expert, professional advice where it matters most and reserve transactional tasks for situations with a clear business need. By adding real value at every touchpoint, you'll empower your colleagues to focus on the highest-priority, highest-risk challenges.
You will be responsible for supporting the delivery of robust, transparent, and timely financial management information and insight, including monthly management accounts, forecasts, dashboards, and analysis of options to inform decision-making.
The role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial data, actively identifies financial risks and opportunities, and provides a clear narrative on the financial position, grounded in a sound understanding of the business groups and their objectives.
You would maintain collaborative, customer-focused relationships across the wider finance community, particularly with finance business partners, working across boundaries to ensure consistent and constructive support to the business.
Key responsibilities:
* Deliver timely and accurate monthly management reporting, providing financial performance updates and ensuring reports reflect an up-to-date and accurate view of the business area's position.
* Interpret and advise on the correct accounting treatment of complex transactions, ensuring compliance with standards and policies and providing assurance on data integrity.
* Lead and oversee the delivery of month-end processes, ensuring outputs meet internal deadlines, standards, and quality expectations.
* Proactively recommend and influence corrective actions to budget holders based on variances, forecasts, and evolving financial risks, supporting informed financial decisions.
* Contribute to external audit, statutory reporting and policy compliance, by ensuring accurate and timely information and collaboration with Financial Accounting.
* Ensure effective financial controls are in place, maintaining high standards of accuracy in data capture and validation across systems.
* Champion continuous improvement, sharing best practices, responding to stakeholder feedback, and adapting processes to improve service delivery and clarity.
* Support and develop Assistant Management Accountants, providing mentoring, task oversight, and building future capability within the team.
The ideal candidate
Knowledge
* CCAB, CIMA or equivalent qualification or a willingness to pursue relevant professional development and qualifications necessary to effectively perform the role, is required. This may be reconsidered in exceptional circumstances
* Understanding of public sector financial planning and performance reporting, financial controls, and relevant statutory frameworks.
* Awareness of reporting tools and evolving platforms such as OAC and EPM.
Skills
* Strong financial analysis and modelling skills with excellent attention to detail.
* Able to communicate financial information effectively to non-specialists.
* Skilled in relationship building and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
* Proficient in Excel and comfortable learning and adapting to new systems.
Experience
* Experience in delivering management accounts, forecasts, and financial reporting.
* Experience of providing proactive financial insight to support decision-making.
* Previous involvement in statutory reporting and policy compliance activities.
* Experience managing or mentoring junior staff desirable
