Role description
We are actively recruiting for a Consultant and/or Senior Consultant to join our growing Fire Engineering team in the UK. The position involves undertaking Fire Safety Engineering work, including desktop reviews of design projects at the initial stages and supporting the fire safety discipline within Arcadis.
The primary focus will be on the building sector, but opportunities to support other sectors may arise, such as rail projects, reflecting Arcadis’s multidisciplinary nature.
Role accountabilities
* Development of Fire Safety Strategy reports;
* Means of Escape analysis, including calculations of evacuation times, escape routes, exit widths, travel distances, and development of evacuation strategy plans;
* Assessment and understanding of key British Fire Safety Regulations and Standards applied to buildings (e.g., Approved Document B, BS9999, BS7974, BS9991, BB100, HTM 05);
* Assessment and understanding of primary British fire safety legislation for rail projects (e.g., London Underground standards, Network Rail standards such as LUL – S1371, Railway Safety Principles and Guidance, BS9992);
* Risk‑based interpretation and application of fire safety documents and Codes of Practice, including international standards such as NFPA 101 and NFPA 130;
* Third‑party review/design verification;
* Attendance of internal and external design team meetings.
* Supporting the development of Fire Risk Assessment reports for both the building and rail sectors.
Additional skills and expertise (advantage)
* Hazard Identification;
* As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) understanding;
* Knowledge of PAS 9980, EWS1 forms and Façade Engineering;
* Understanding of the Building Safety Act 2022;
* Fire Risk Assessment principles;
* Understanding of fire dynamics, heat transfer and smoke behaviour principles in enclosed environments (particularly undergrounds and tunnels);
* Basic understanding of Active Fire Protection (AFP) systems and Passive Fire Protection (PFP) measures;
* Basic knowledge of fire modelling simulation (e.g., CFAST, FDS, Pyrosim, SMARTFIRE).
Qualifications & Experience
* Strong experience of fire safety engineering skills;
* Suitable engineering or related degree (e.g., Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Physics, Chemistry, Maths) from a recognised university;
* Qualifications recognised by a professional engineering body, with an aspiration to full membership;
* Ideally a Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership;
* Ability to work independently on set tasks and to contribute to a team environment;
* Willingness to take on challenges and support other experts when required;
* Ability to prepare proposals and marketing material related to Arcadis’s Fire Safety capabilities;
* CSCS Card – desirable;
* Ability to obtain Security Clearance – desirable.
