University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is offering a fixed-term Resident Non Airway Fellow post in the Wessex Neurological Intensive Care Unit, commencing February 2026. The initial appointment is for 6 months with a view to extend to 12 months.

Job responsibilities
Junior Clinical Fellows are primarily involved in the daily management of neurological intensive care patients. Attendance and presentation of patients at ward rounds is expected. Routine work is shared among Fellows and supporting medical staff. Fellows will be expected to acquire skills such as central venous line insertion and arterial cannulation, with meticulous training provided.
Opportunities exist to develop skills in lung ultrasound, transthoracic echocardiography, lumbar puncture, cerebrospinal fluid sampling and analysis, and multimodal monitoring for neurotrauma (including intracranial pressure waveform analysis and brain tissue oxygenation monitoring).
Fellows may manage organ support measures after demonstrating competence and assist senior staff, including care related to brain stem death testing and organ donation. Meticulous record keeping and computer literacy are essential. Handover to colleagues should be comprehensive. Mandatory teaching is organised weekly, and attendance at multidisciplinary meetings is encouraged. Fellows may have opportunities to teach and improve presentation skills and to participate in clinical research trials and audits in the neurological intensive care unit. Full support for funded study leave is provided and fellows are encouraged to present at regional, national and international conferences. An educational supervisor will be assigned and workplace-based assessments and appraisal are required.

Qualifications and experience
Essential — MBBS or equivalent medical qualification; GMC registration with license to practise; 2 years of post-qualification experience; full completion of uninterrupted UK Foundation Training or equivalent.
Desirable — postgraduate qualification (ALS/ATLS); postgraduate examinations (FRCA/MRCP/FFICM/MCEM/EDIC) or equivalent; prior NHS acute specialty or NHS Intensive Care experience.
Aptitudes and skills — understanding of equality and diversity; Foundation Competencies or equivalent fully completed and evidenced; IT skills.
Desirable — anaesthetic and/or ICU practical skills.
