Carrington West are working with Derby City Council to find a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Reactive Maintenance) on an initial 6-month contract.
This role is firmly focused on reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis, supporting council-owned buildings across Derby, including schools. You'll act as the technical lead when systems fail, identifying causes, specifying remedial works and ensuring safe, compliant outcomes.
The role
·Diagnose mechanical and heating system failures across council buildings
·Attend site, investigate faults and produce clear defect and condition reports
·Raise and manage work orders via the maintenance portal
·Provide mechanical and heating design input where required
·Supervise contractors and inspect works for quality and compliance
·Advise schools and stakeholders on maintenance priorities
·Ensure compliance with health & safety and energy efficiency standards
You'll be site-based in Derby around 3 days per week.
About you
·Strong background in mechanical & heating maintenance
·Proven experience in reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis
·Previous "on the tools" experience highly desirable
·Gas certification and recognised mechanical qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 7, BTEC HNC/HND or similar)
·Confident producing technical reports and making engineering decisions

·Rate: £46.40 per hour (Inside IR35 - Umbrella)
