Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Management
Provide clinical leadership, guidance, and support to junior staff, including one-to-ones, appraisals, supervision, and mentorship.
Act as a positive role model and clinical expert, ensuring professional standards are embedded and upheld.
Deputise for the OH Clinical Service Lead when required, ensuring continuity of service.
Represent the Occupational Health department at Trust meetings, working groups, and external forums.
Support the prioritisation and management of workload to ensure effective service delivery.
Occupational Health Service Delivery
Deliver specialist clinical advice and case management to staff, managers, and service users.
Conduct health assessments, pre-placement screenings, workplace assessments, and health surveillance (e.g. COSHH).
Plan, initiate, and deliver vaccination programmes (including recall and contact tracing) in accordance with Department of Health guidance and Trust policy.
Administer vaccinations and carry out venepuncture for immunity testing (e.g. Hepatitis B/C, HIV, Rubella, Varicella, Measles).
Provide follow-up support after inoculation/contamination incidents and staff accidents.
Deliver a confidential advisory service, including referrals for mental health and wellbeing support.
Support the delivery of Occupational Health services to NHS and commercial clients within contractual agreements.
Act as client advocate, ensuring their views inform service development and improvement.
Quality, Risk & Governance
Lead in the development, implementation, and monitoring of clinical standards and service quality metrics.
Participate in and lead audits, research programmes, and outbreak investigations as required.
Ensure service delivery is compliant with NHS Plus standards, HSE legislation, CQC, NICE guidance, and Trust policies.
Support the Trust's Risk Management framework by identifying and minimising clinical and non-clinical risks.
Investigate and act on complaints, adverse incidents, and root cause analyses to improve practice and outcomes.
Contribute to implementation of action plans where services fall below required standards.
Collaboration & Partnership Working
Work collaboratively with colleagues across HR, Health & Safety, Infection Prevention & Control, Emergency Department (needlestick/splash injuries), Wellbeing services, and TB services.
Build and maintain effective partnerships with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies.
Actively contribute to Directorate and Trust-wide initiatives to support organisational objectives.
Professional Practice
Ensure accurate, legible, and secure clinical records are maintained in line with NMC Code, Data Protection legislation, and Trust policies.
Administer medicines safely and effectively in accordance with NMC guidelines.
Promote high standards of professionalism, dress, and infection prevention practice to enhance patient and public confidence.
Maintain professional registration and portfolio in line with NMC revalidation requirements.
Engage in continuous professional development through training, conferences, and reflective practice.
Contribute to the development and delivery of training materials and education programmes to promote professional growth within the team.
Governance & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with the Trust's Risk Management policies and procedures.
Promote a culture of cleanliness, infection prevention, and zero tolerance of avoidable infections.
Ensure Occupational Health services are delivered in line with clinical governance frameworks and service KPIs.
Participate in audits, client feedback processes, and service evaluations to support continuous improvement.
Education & Development
Support and develop junior staff through mentorship, appraisals, and supervision.
Facilitate a positive learning environment and promote reflective practice within the team.
Participate in the design and delivery of health promotion and staff wellbeing initiatives.
Undertake annual appraisal and maintain a personal development plan.
Keep up to date with current developments in Occupational Health and nursing practice

Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Registered General Nurse
* Post registration, Occupational Health qualification / NMC specialist registration
Knowledge
Essential criteria
* On-going professional development
* Good knowledge of clinical governance
* Quality Improvement tools and audit
* Risk management Issues
* Ability to undertake and evaluate Keystone vision screening, spirometry and audiometry tests
* Key issues and development in nursing
* IT skills and the ability to use computer packages
Experience
Essential criteria
* Significant post registration experience in a variety of primary and secondary care clinical settings
* Significant experience at Band 6 or above in more than one area of practice
* Minimum of 5 years post registration experience
* Minimum of 2 years Occupational Health experience, in similar environment/NHS
