Job Overview

This is a fixed‑term Consultant post created as part of service changes in Southwark CAMHS. The position is within South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and involves direct clinical activity, structured professional activities and contribution to service development, clinical governance, quality improvement, and continuous professional development.


Responsibilities

* Assessment and management of children and young people, including psychiatric input for routine and emergency care.
* Consultation to team members and professionals from other agencies such as family early help practitioners, education colleagues, etc.
* Carry out mental health and risk assessments, including use of the MHA where appropriate, and support the multidisciplinary team in managing these situations effectively.
* Assume responsibility for own case list and case management in partnership with the MDT.
* Use pharmacological interventions in partnership with children, families and their networks of care.
* Provide supervision to junior medical staff and allocate CT, ST and a specialty doctor.
* Participate in the training of medical students, psychiatric trainees and multidisciplinary staff.
* Attend and chair clinical meetings as timetabled.
* Consider safeguarding issues for each case, consult with other professionals and refer concerns to appropriate safeguarding teams.
* Communicate skilfully, tactfully and sensitively with children, families and other professionals, taking account any potential barrier to communication.
* Maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping and report writing, in accordance with professional and Trust guidelines, including electronic data entry and recording.
* Work as an autonomous professional within professional guidelines, policies and procedures of the Trust, providing advice and guidance to members of the MDT.
* Link with statutory and voluntary agencies, professionals and other CAMHS teams in support of referral and treatment pathways and joint work.
* Maintain good relationships and clear lines of communication with other professional agencies and departments, providing specialist advice and support where appropriate.
* Provide continuity of care with a high standard of verbal and written communication.
* Participate in peer and group supervision meetings.
* Adhere to agreed job plan and appraisal procedures set by the Trust.
* Maintain GMC registration, Licence to Practice and participate in CPD to remain in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Maintain Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval; if not yet approved, achieve as soon as possible.
* Provide cross‑cover for colleagues during periods of leave and offer advice and/or clinical input to other CAMHS teams as needed.


Qualifications

* Fully registered with the GMC and holding a licence to practice at appointment.
* Evidence for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within six months of gaining CCT in Child & Adolescent psychiatry (or equivalent training with CESR issued by the GMC).
* Section 12 approved.
* Approved Clinician status, or able to achieve within three months of appointment.
* Experience in outpatient/community Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
* Experience of assessing and managing complex co‑morbidities.
* Trained in ADI and/or ADOS.
* Training in investigation of complaints and serious incidents.
* Experience of providing consultation to non‑CAMHS practitioners and multi‑agency work.
* Special interest in neuro‑developmental conditions.
* Experience and/or additional training in forensic mental health.
* Experience of paediatric liaison and crisis care.
* Specialist training in psychopharmacology.
* Participation in audit or QI in clinical posts (management/audit).
* Experience of teaching a range of disciplines.
* Involvement in research projects.
* Excellent demonstrable communication skills in English (oral and written).
* Ability to work within a multi‑disciplinary team and resolve conflict.
* Probity.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Ability to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post.
* Reflection on the purpose of CPD undertaken.
* Experience in clinical research and / or service evaluation.
* Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement (awards, prizes, presentations, publications).
* Led quality improvement projects/audits leading to service change or improved outcomes.
* Involvement with business planning of clinical services.
* Peer‑reviewed publication and, optionally, book publication.
* MRCPsych or equivalent.
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
* Experience in other relevant specialties such as inpatient psychiatry, psychotherapy, etc.
* Excellent leadership skills.
* Excellent child and adolescent psychiatric assessment skills.
* Good ability to relate to children, adolescents and parents/carers.
* Good team working ability.
* Understanding of safeguarding.
* Ability to assess capacity and consent.
* Understanding of the management of complaints and serious incidents.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge and fitness to practice.
* Expertise in the use and application of the Mental Health Act in children and young people.
* Experience of CAMHS work with younger children.
* Evidence of skills in consultation to non‑mental health specialists (e.g., GPs, social workers, paediatricians).
* Evidence of a range of specialist and subspecialist experience relevant to the post within NHS or comparable service.
* Expertise in CBT or other therapeutic interventions to postgraduate level.
* Significant experience developing and leading outpatient/community CAMHS psychiatric care.
* Significant experience of crisis care.
* Expertise in the use and application of the Children Act in children and young people.
