Job summary
An opportunity exists for a Full Time experienced HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist who will be responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service. This role suits an experienced biomedical scientist with strong technical skills, excellent communication, and high quality standards to be part of an energetic, highly motivated and dynamic team providing an efficient service to our patients.
Main duties
You will be part of a team responsible for the day-to-day running of the Clinical Biochemistry/Haematology and BT sections and will provide a service of the highest standard to our service users. The department has state-of-the-art Roche automation and an impressive portfolio of routine testing. The site works closely with specialist hub laboratories located at Manchester and the Halo to deliver a high-quality service and enhanced patient care. The Laboratory services Biochemistry, Haematology, BT and Microbiology pathology needs for Ross Hall Hospital, Kings Park hospital in Stirling and the Braehead Clinic. We are UKAS accredited and a recognised HCPC / IBMS training laboratory for both registration and specialist portfolios. The role is 37.5 hours per week on a shift pattern including early, late and on-call such as weekends on a rotational basis.

Job description / Job responsibilities
To assist with the daily running of the sections to which you have been assigned in the laboratory, providing a multidisciplinary service to all users and offering general support in other disciplines including On-Call. Maintain the highest professional and technical standards in the department.
Main duties (illustrative):
* Maintain the highest standards of quality within the department and comply with current regulatory standards and the TDL Quality Management System. Follow local procedures (SOPs) and maintain technical competence in all sections.
* Perform Haematology, Coagulation and other related tests accurately and efficiently.
* Perform Blood Transfusion tests and procedures accurately and efficiently.
* Perform Biochemistry, Immunoassay tests and other related tests accurately and efficiently.
* Maintain Blood Transfusion stock levels and records and monitor usage to ensure efficient use.
* General housekeeping including stock and waste management.
* Prepare, store and use reagents in accordance with COSHH, dispose of reagents appropriately, and monitor minimum stock levels.
* Replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and monitor stock levels.
* Routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment and benches.
* Handle, use and dispose of blood and hazardous chemicals safely according to COSHH.
* Use the Laboratory Information System (LIS/LIMS) and maintain the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases.
* Register specimens in LIMS, prepare samples, and carry out clerical and technical tasks per sample handling procedures.
* Maintain equipment, run controls and calibrations, ensure equipment functions correctly prior to analysis.
* Carry out troubleshooting and inform the senior BMS as required.
* Perform manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations.
* Evaluate results for credibility and inform the Consultant Pathologist and/or requesting clinician of abnormal findings.
* Enter and authorise results onto the LIMS; handle telephone enquiries professionally within defined protocols.
* Adhere to flexible working arrangements and participate in extended shifts, evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays as required by Management.
* Rotate through laboratory workstations to maintain multidisciplinary skills for On-Call.
* Be involved in referral of samples to third-party laboratories and delivery of results including postal reports.
* Comply with revenue capture procedures and keep colleagues informed of sectional changes.
* Assist in other sections when required and participate in multi-disciplinary On-Call rota.
* Provide input to maintaining policies and procedures; review and update as required; comply with Health and Safety legislation.
Person Specification
Experience
Essential - Theoretical and practical knowledge in pathology relevant to the role; previous laboratory experience and proficiency in techniques appropriate to the discipline.
Qualifications
Essential - HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist; IBMS Accredited BSc (Hons); Biomedical Science or equivalent; participation in a relevant CPD Scheme (e.g., IBMS).
Skills and Abilities
Essential - Good organisational skills; accurate, neat and efficient work; attention to detail; ability to work in a team and on own initiative; keyboard skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite; maintain patient confidentiality; communicate effectively in English; experience with laboratory equipment and quality management systems.
