Job overview
The Stroke Unit on Harvest B at Queen’s Hospital (BHRUT) is seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic, and highly motivated Junior Sister/Charge Nurse with a strong interest in Acute Stroke care. The unit cares for patients receiving Thrombolysis, Mechanical Thrombectomy, and those stepping down from the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit following neurosurgical procedures such as craniectomy. You will need excellent clinical and leadership skills to support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in managerial responsibilities, lead shifts, and ensure the highest standards of patient care.
This is a full-time post within the Specialist Medicine Division, based on Harvest B Acute Stroke Unit (ASU). The role involves working a rotation of long days and nights, including weekends and bank holidays. You will receive full support with governance responsibilities, specialist training, and personal development opportunities.
BHRUT operates across Queen’s Hospital, Romford, and King George Hospital, Ilford. The ASU is a 24/7, 30-bed unit caring for patients throughout the Stroke Pathway. Applicants must hold Adult NMC registration and have substantial Band 5 experience in acute or ward-based nursing, ideally within Stroke or Neurosciences, with proven shift leadership and supervisory skills. You should also demonstrate the Trust’s PRIDE values and contribute towards achieving organisational goals.

To provide support to the Senior Sister in effectively leading and managing the ward, participating in all ward activities as an effective team member, supporting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse taking the responsibility for the leadership of a team of staff.
To assess care needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. To teach and supervise qualified and unqualified staff, and act as a role model to junior staff, undertaking performance management is required.
To take responsibility and accountability for a group of patients and the whole ward for the duration of the shift, and to provide clinical care to patients with high quality care, and the patient experience, as focus.
Working for our organisation
We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and, in recognition of our progress, we’ve been shortlisted for Trust of the Year at the Health Service Journal Awards.
We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.
Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub.
These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.
The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
