Are you passionate about preserving artifacts from the past and uncovering hidden treasures?
The North East Scotland Preservation Trust – NESPT is looking for a qualified and experienced Heritage Curator to take the lead in organising and interpreting the fascinating contents of The Marble Warehouse and Workshop in Portsoy.
Within these historic spaces are hundreds of fascinating items collected over many years – from early Daisy Hoovers and Thonet chairs to the Portsoy Railway Station sign, vintage theatre seats, and beautiful pieces of Portsoy marble, stone, and fossils.
Your Mission:
You’ll lead the sorting, cataloguing, and assessment of this varied collection, determining which items hold historical or social significance, which may be displayed or restored, and which can be responsibly disposed of.
What You’ll Be Doing:
* Overseeing the careful handling and cataloguing of artefacts in line with museum standards
* Supervising the transfer of objects from the Warehouse and Workshop to the adjacent Granary for documentation
* Working alongside a small support team (lifting and sorting assistance provided)
* Participating in community outreach events, sharing discoveries and connecting with those who once worked in these storied spaces
* Advising the NESPT on potential display, conservation, or disposal of items
What We’re Looking For:
* Proven experience in museum, heritage, or archive curation
* Knowledge of 18th–20th century social history
* Familiarity with the care and handling of both historic and contemporary materials
* A collaborative spirit and enthusiasm for engaging with the local Portsoy community
Full PPE, welfare facilities, and IT equipment will be provided.
Fee and Duration
It is estimated that the work will require three days a week for six months to complete. The position would be based in Portsoy, with the flexibility for homeworking to suit requirements of the role as the project progresses, subject to agreement with the NESPT Project Director. A maximum budget of £19,000 is available, made possible by a grant from the Architectural Heritage Fund.
