JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Instrumentation Core Staff is responsible for maintenance, training, and technical support for life science instrumentation in core research facilities. The primary responsibilities include establishing and supporting experimental procedures as well as troubleshooting and maintaining a variety of life science instrumentation. The Instrumentation Core Staff member is part of WPI’s core facilities’ technical support team and partners closely with faculty, staff, and students (undergraduate and graduate) to ensure customers’ needs are met. The major scientific instrumentation includes GC-MS, LC-MS, PCR, AFM, flow cytometry, and plate readers.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Working under the direction of the Director of the Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center (LSBC) this position will be responsible for performing varied duties including the following:
1. Communicate effectively with all stakeholders and provide exceptional customer service
2. Develop and implement procedures for life science instrumentation
3. Manage and track instrument usage and maintenance in iLab online calendaring system
4. Effectively manage internal and external users’ access, training, scheduling, usage tracking, and monthly invoicing in iLab and Workday
5. Identify and maintain appropriate supply of spare parts/consumables for all of the instruments, including order placement and receipt
6. Produce quarterly and annual usage reports;
7. Enable efficient new instrument installations by partnering with faculty, Procurement and Facilities colleagues, and others as necessary
8. Forge strong partnerships with faculty and fellow technical support staff
9. Liaison with WPI Facilities staff and safety officers
10. Develop and disseminate instrumentation startup guides and tutorials as needed
11. Train new users and certify competence
12. Stay current on analytical techniques and technologies by attending training workshops
13. Perform all other duties as assigned
Requirements:
14. Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field
15. 5 Years industry experience
16. Experience with PCR, flow cytometry, plate readers, liquid handling
17. Experience with Atomic Force Microscopy with knowhow in advanced scanning probe modes
18. Be an effective and flexible communicator to a very diverse community
19. Strong technical, analytical, and computer skills
20. Be responsive to customers’ needs
