Location: North LondonSalary: £60,112.67 per annum, plus up to 5% PRP bonusReporting to: Assistant Director, Major Works Role Overview The Legal Counsel – Construction will lead on litigation and latent defect claims, providing expert legal advice and oversight across a range of complex construction-related matters. This includes drafting and reviewing contracts, managing dispute resolution processes, and supporting procurement activities. The role also involves collaboration with internal teams and external legal professionals, ensuring legal compliance and best practice across all construction projects. Key Responsibilities A. Legal and Contractual Duties Lead and manage latent defect claims, including reviewing historical documentation, construction contracts, warranties, and insurance terms. Provide clear, concise legal advice in plain English for internal stakeholders. Advise on all aspects of construction contracts, including payments, extensions of time, loss and expense, defects, procurement, and insurance. Draft and amend contracts such as building contracts, development agreements, consultant and contractor appointments, and associated documents (e.g. warranties, novations, assignments). Review and contribute to adjudication and arbitration submissions. Oversee proceedings in the Technology and Construction Court. Maintain a precedent library of construction contracts and bespoke clauses. Support the Special Projects Team on complex procurement exercises. Deliver training and guidance to Property Services staff on construction law and contracting best practices. Assist in resolving complex or high-value commercial disputes pre-litigation. B. Case Management and Administration Maintain and update case records across digital and manual systems. Ensure accurate and timely updates to project trackers and file structures. Conduct audits to ensure compliance and completeness of documentation. Liaise with solicitors and barristers, preparing bundles and reports as required. Respond to legal queries and manage the Legal inbox, escalating urgent matters appropriately. C. Financial Oversight Set up purchase orders and process invoices related to legal and construction matters. Reconcile supplier accounts and audit external works against invoiced services. Maintain accurate financial records and support supplier setup in IPOS systems. D. Collaboration and Support Work closely with Special Project Surveyors to progress latent defect claims. Ensure evidence is correctly documented and deadlines are met. Provide legal support and guidance throughout the claims process. Liaise with residents and colleagues to deliver customer service aligned with Newlon’s values. Respond to complaints and queries, ensuring timely and professional resolution. E. Team Contribution Support the effective operation of the Special Projects Team. Contribute to the resolution of complex complaints, ensuring responses are thorough, timely, and customer-focused. Liaise with executive departments, contractors, consultants, and partners to gather information and develop solutions.
