About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Corporate Governance Lawyer to join our team. You will be responsible for delivering specialist complex legal advice to clients including council officers, committees, and elected members. Your expertise will ensure principles of good governance are met in decision-making, complying with the regulatory framework. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the Council's statutory and contractual obligations are met, providing high-quality legal advice on complex local authority governance and public law issues.

First stage technical interviews will be held virtually via Microsoft Teams (date TBC). Second stage interviews are scheduled at New Shire Hall, Alconbury Weald on 28 May 2025.


Key Responsibilities

1. Support the Service Director: Legal and Governance and act as Deputy Monitoring Officer, providing expert legal advice on governance matters.
2. Respond to queries, draft legal comments, and provide guidance on governance issues.
3. Assist with constitution queries, report writing, standards complaints, legal research, and briefing counsel.
4. Attend meetings to provide legal advice, supervise litigation, and advise on the Council’s constitution and protocols.
5. Determine the impact of new legislation, develop processes, and respond to information requests.
6. Represent the Council at external meetings.


Candidate Requirements

You should be an admitted Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives with a current practising certificate and at least 5 years of relevant post-qualification experience. Extensive experience in corporate governance, public law, human rights, and equalities legislation is essential. Proven ability to provide expert legal advice in local government, operate in politically sensitive environments, and build effective relationships is required. Awareness of equality, diversity, inclusion, and commitment to the Council’s Net Zero goal by 2030 are also important.
