Responsibilities
* The Fellow attends specialist clinics and dedicated corneal theatre sessions under the direction of the Consultant trainers.
* Acquire skills appropriate to Consultant Ophthalmologists providing a major sub‑specialist service in a large eye centre.
* Gain wide clinical experience in the management of corneal and external eye diseases, including refractive laser surgery.
* Participate actively in the diagnosis, management and follow‑up of patients under the care of the Consultant.
* Undertake surgery both under supervision and, where appropriate, unsupervised.
* Typically be involved in 3 supervised operating sessions and 2 specialist clinics each week, with additional sessions within the refractive laser suite.
* Lead an acute corneal clinic once a week.
* Supervise some of the work of junior trainees as part of the training experience.
Clinical Work Environment
The post offers wide clinical experience in the management of corneal, external eye diseases and laser refractive surgery. The Fellow will work in a multidisciplinary environment through close liaison with the corneal nurse practitioner, optometrists (including contact‑lens practitioners) and colleagues within Rheumatology, Dermatology, ENT and Oral Medicine (not exhaustive). Most of these specialties are within MFT.
