Are you a graduate who is resilient, compassionate and motivated to support young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? Are you looking to gain meaningful, hands‑on experience that will support a future career in education, psychology, SEN, mental health or social care?

Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and dynamic SEN setting in Oldham. This role offers a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of young people while building valuable professional experience.

About the Role

You will support pupils with a range of additional needs, including Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (CLDD), Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, and SEMH needs. Pupils are supported through adapted learning approaches that focus on consistency, emotional regulation, communication and positive relationships.

Working closely with teachers, therapists, support staff and parents/carers, you will help provide nurturing, personalised support aligned with each pupil’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Key Responsibilities

Providing 1:1 and small‑group support based on individual EHCP targets
Supporting pupils with SEMH needs, promoting emotional wellbeing, resilience and self‑regulation
Adapting learning activities to meet sensory, cognitive, emotional and communication needs
Using PECS, visual timetables, sensory strategies and communication aids
Supporting pupils during periods of regulated and dysregulated behaviour, using positive behaviour and de‑escalation techniques
Encouraging independence, confidence, engagement and life skills through consistent routines
Supporting the setup of engaging learning resources and maintaining a safe, inclusive environment
Consistently maintaining high standards of accurate record keeping
Communicating with parents/carers where appropriate
Assisting with personal care, including toileting, feeding, mobility and changing where required
Essential Requirements

A genuine interest in supporting children and young people with SEN and SEMH needs
Patient, adaptable and resilient approach
Confident and proactive, with the ability to use initiative
Able to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Availability for a full‑time, long‑term role
Desirable (Not Essential)

Experience supporting children or young people with SEN and/or SEMH
Experience or knowledge of Autism, PMLD, CLDD or behavioural support

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
