The position as a Senior Teaching Fellow in Engineering Design is an open-ended position with the opportunity to progress your career to Professor of Learning and Teaching. The position includes working with students across multiple levels, including Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate Taught (PGT), Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and also across Graduate Apprenticeship and Degree Apprenticeship (DA) programmes, where apprentices are employed by an organisation and also study towards their degree with the University of Strathclyde. DMEM’s study programmes are accredited by three professional institutions: the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The Department has a strong international reputation for teaching and research, and is one of the premier departments in the UK. The vacancy currently being advertised aims to complement existing expertise that focuses on Product Design Engineering. You will be fluent in engineering design and cognisant of the interfaces to manufacturing and engineering management. Candidates in all areas related to Engineering Design will be considered, with specialisation in at least one of the routes, including, but not limited to: (1) design process methodology, design methods and tools, (2) creative design and technologies, (3) design psychology and behavioural science, (4) design for manufacturing, or (5) mechanics, analysis, modelling and simulation, experimentation and computation, computer-based design systems (CAD/CAM/AI/Digital product design engineering/innovation), or (5) AI and data science for design and engineering science. In the role you will deliver teaching, teaching support and other activities to ensure that a world-class student experience is enabled for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, through the delivery of lectures, classes, workshops, tutorials, project supervision and assessment. You will also be expected to undertake scholarly and research activities aligned with teaching activities. You will be an ambassador of our Department, the Faculty of Engineering, and Strathclyde, and be responsible for developing our Department’s reputation in its teaching activities both internal and external to our University. You will work as part of a team specifically focused on developing our students’ core professional engineering skills in engineering design and the ability to apply fundamental engineering principles to real-world engineering problems. The role requires delivery of a variety of types of teaching within the core modules of our established portfolio of integrated engineering programmes. The key focus of the role is delivering the very best student experience and giving our graduates industrially relevant engineering skills. You will be expected to teach both on-campus and online using the full range of university digital systems and tools. The Department currently utilises its own teaching and workshop facilities along with those provided by other Departments in the Faculty of Engineering and the University as a whole. DMEM students have access to a wide variety of design and (additive) manufacturing equipment in our multiple workshops and labs, e.g. the DMEM’s Digital Design and Manufacturing Studio (DDMS). Across the street and green space from the James Weir building where our Department’s facilities are housed, the University has most recently opened a £60 million state of the art Learning & Teaching hub, aimed at furthering our research and technology programmes. We emphasise through-life learning and offer multiple programmes, including Graduate Apprenticeships, Undergraduate, Postgraduate Taught, Distance Learning, Continuous Professional Development, and Executive programmes comprised of modules across the disciplines of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management. Given the global challenge of climate change and the significant impact of products and their manufacturing process on the environment there is an increasing focus on research, KE and degree and skills training within engineering design. This is evidenced by increasing funding calls in designing digital transformations, designing sustainable societies, e.g. H2020/HorizonEurope, EPSRC, AHRC, InnovateUK, and others. Furthermore, you have the opportunity to work with the design team within NMIS and AFRC to provide sustainable design and manufacturing expertise for collaborative research and industrial projects and related High Value Manufacturing Catapult activity. There will also be additional opportunities through Glasgow City Innovation District (GCID) and regional initiatives to develop educational mission-driven offerings.
