Job overview

CPD is being paid at the higher level of £2000 per annum with the facility accumulating annual funding for up to three years to accommodate accessing higher cost development opportunities.

We are seeking a consultant psychiatrist to join our older people’s consultant group to provide clinical leadership and psychiatry expertise to our older people’s inpatient ward, Abbeygate. Abbeygate Ward is based in Wedgwood House on the West Suffolk Hospital site in Bury St Edmunds. This is a fixed‑term position covering maternity leave.

Main duties of the job

The consultant will need to be an Approved Clinician to be able to carry out full duties associated with this post. The consultant will be expected to provide medical expertise and support the existing staff in the assessment, diagnosis and management of older adults presenting with functional and organic mental health problems to Abbeygate ward.

The post holder will provide clinical leadership for colleagues in deciding the most appropriate intervention for patients referred to the services. This will include providing direct and indirect intervention and facilitating discharge through collaborative working with primary care, community services, Social Care, private providers and the voluntary sector to provide a seamless pathway for older adults.

The consultant will be expected to work closely with the other consultant psychiatrists in the acute and crisis pathways as well as colleagues in the community. Services for older people are viewed as providing much needed specialist expertise in old age psychiatry to be able to deliver care of a high standard to our older population.

Additionally, the post‑holder, as is expected from the holder of a senior public position, must at all times comply fully with the Nolan Principles and the Standards of Business Conduct.
