About the Business Unit
The Buildings and Cities Unit (BLD) is a major presence in Mott MacDonald’s regional offices throughout the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of transferable cross‑sector skills across five key sectors: Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.
About the Role
We are expanding our regional maritime teams and are currently recruiting for a Principal Ports/Maritime Engineer (Design Manager/Associate) to join our growing maritime team in Scotland and North East England. You will deliver advisory, project management, design and supervisory services to a range of private and public sector clients on ports and coastal projects, including refurbishment and upgrade of linkspans, pier works, breakwater works, STAG and OBC studies for new ferry terminals, sea outfalls, cooling water intake and outfall systems, and redevelopment of former shipyard sites.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Unit Maritime Account Leader you will employ your technical expertise to deliver projects within the maritime sector and guide and develop other team members on technical aspects of projects. Your tasks will include:
* Leading the design and delivery of maritime and coastal engineering projects
* Planning and structuring work using appropriate tools, managing resource demands and priorities
* Tracking performance, managing risks and ensuring projects meet or exceed profit, deadline and quality targets
* Contributing to bidding and winning work by defining key selling points, calculating fees and presenting the commercial case, while following Mott MacDonald’s bid processes
* Acting as a role‑model for health, safety and environmental management procedures
Qualifications
* Degree qualified and a chartered member of a relevant institution (e.g. ICE)
* Experience in commission management and leading design teams
* Demonstrated ability to provide high levels of support to clients
* Clear and precise communication skills, both verbally and in written reports
Although not essential, knowledge or experience in contract administration and the design of coastal structures is advantageous. Experience in successfully developing new client relationships and securing new business within the ports and maritime sector would also be beneficial.
About You
As a Civil or Structural Engineer within the maritime industry, you have experience in designing port and maritime facilities and in preparing specifications and contract documentation. You are comfortable with client‑facing roles, establishing professional relationships with internal and external clients, and leading and mentoring project teams. You are highly organized, possess strong planning and management skills, and are able to handle technical, commercial and personal interfaces.
