Design Manager (WINEP) - Balfour Beatty (@One Alliance)
Location: Hybrid, Peterborough (minimum 3 days per fortnight working from the Peterborough office)

The Alliance is a ground-breaking collaboration between Anglian Water and eight industry-leading partners: Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, MMB, MWH Treatment, Skanska and SWECO. Balfour Beatty are seeking a Design Manager (WINEP) to work on the @One Alliance and lead the delivery of potable water non‑infrastructure design projects.
You will manage a multi‑disciplinary engineering team (circa 15–20 staff), delivering design solutions across asset maintenance, groundwater abstraction, WTW upgrades, WINEP river support schemes and emergency works, including a £60m upgrade at Covenham Water Treatment Works.
What you'll be doing
Key Accountabilities
* Design Management: Lead and manage engineering design delivery across the potable water non‑infrastructure portfolio
* Develop and manage Engineering Project Plans covering scope, programme, cost, risk and resources
* Provide direction on treatment methods and process design in collaboration with Senior Discipline Engineers
* Assess project complexity and deploy suitably competent engineering resources
* Embed design quality procedures to achieve a right‑first‑time approach
* Manage supplier and subcontractor design input, from engagement through to integration
* Project Delivery: Work collaboratively with wider alliance functions to deliver successful outcomes
* Identify and deliver opportunities to improve affordability and value
* Support and manage project programmes to achieve milestones and drive efficiencies
* Produce designs that enhance sustainability and long‑term asset performance
* Health & Safety: Undertake delegated Principal Designer duties in line with CDM Regulations
* Manage CDM competency assessments across your team and projects
* Ensure robust design risk assessments and effective health & safety documentation
* People & Team Development: Provide clear, visible and consistent leadership to your design team
* Undertake people management responsibilities, including performance and development
* Allocate resources based on project priorities and complexity
* Support team development and recruitment as the portfolio grows
* Transformation: Support the engineering team’s transition into AMP8
* Champion innovation, digital delivery, and continuous improvement
* Drive reductions in carbon and natural capital through design solutions
Who we're looking for
About You
You’ll ideally hold a degree in an engineering discipline and be Chartered or working towards Chartered status, with proven experience in the UK water sector, particularly within potable water non‑infrastructure treatment projects.
