The deputy editor works closely with the editor and the news editor to deliver a distinctive, agenda-setting news package across all platforms for The Times and The Sunday Times in Scotland. They will ensure world-class standards of digital and print journalism, and help to lead the Scottish editorial team as we move to digital-first commissioning and publishing.
Responsibilities
1. Successfully manage a productive relationship with the editor, the news editor, and with journalists in London and Glasgow
2. Work with editors, writers, and reporters to conceive, commission, and edit distinctive agenda-setting stories for a digital and print audience, focusing on constructive stories that put people at the heart, with high-quality analysis and expertise
3. Help to create the newslist and manage the development of stories with the editor, reporters, and writers
4. Commission exclusive video, polls, interactive graphics, and picture galleries to engage our digital audience and plan how these stories are shared and promoted online
5. Use SEO, Inca, Pars.ly, and Google Trends to help guide commissioning
6. Use social networking and other digital platforms for content generation and to promote The Times and The Sunday Times Scotland content
7. Forward-plan, working with journalists on long-range projects and investigations
8. Help to lead and manage the newsroom, develop talent, and support progression
9. Assist the Scottish editor with managing the budget as efficiently as possible to meet objectives, ensuring all products are commercially viable
Skills and Experience
* Experience working as a senior editor for a national newspaper
* Demonstrable expertise in Scottish current affairs and politics
* An understanding of how audience data supports commissioning and how to promote a story on social media and through search engines
* Ability to attract and retain new digital audiences
* Ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines, and with rigorous accuracy
* Effective communication skills
* Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
* Persuasive presentation skills and strong interpersonal skills, with problem-solving abilities
* Understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
