The Role

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and vibrant group of experienced clinical educators and academics as part of the Essentials of Medical Practice portion of the Medicine Programme at Newcastle University.

You will be accountable to the Board of Medical Studies through the Office of the Director of Medical Studies/ Degree Programme Director to develop and deliver teaching across relevant areas of the Graduate Entry (A101) programme and Years 1 and 2 of the MBBS programme.

The post-holder will have a particular focus, but will not be limited to, facilitating discussion of clinical cases and delivery of teaching related to clinical reasoning, communication skills and clinical skills.

In addition, the post holders will participate in scholarship, student support, recruitment and admissions, assessment and course management / leadership activities within the School.

Key Accountabilities

Primary duties and responsibilities will include:

1. Making a significant contribution to the School's strategic development and delivery of high-quality teaching and learning in all relevant areas,
2. Developing and delivering high quality teaching and facilitation of clinical cases in the Graduate Entry (A101) and five-year (A100) programmes,
3. Working with colleagues delivering teaching across the MBBS programme to ensure the development of high quality and innovative face-to-face delivery and online resources,
4. Contributing to the development and marking of assessments, including clinical examinations, and ensure examiners of clinical assessments are trained,
5. Contributing to Medical Education research linked to your area of teaching practice,
6. Contributing to recruitment and admissions, assessment and student support activities within the School,
7. Contributing to the development and delivery of relevant in teaching to programmes/courses external to the School as directed by the Head of School.

Support for postholder:

8. Staff development opportunities as provided by the School of Medicine and Health Education England working across the North East,
9. Support for staff development opportunities offered elsewhere e.g. ASME,
10. Administrative support as appropriate from the Medical Student Office,
11. Annual appraisal (University PDR process), which complements the NHS appraisal.

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

12. Knowledge of the Newcastle MBBS programme,
13. Experience of teaching medical students in large and small group settings,
14. Potential to link research, practice and teaching,
15. Can provide evidence of previous teaching experience of teaching on a UK medical degree,
16. Experience of facilitation, one-to-one and group tutorials, teaching in clinical encounters and pastoral support,
17. Willingness to undergo observation of teaching from an external person on at least one occasion per year.

Desirable:

18. Lecture writing and teaching skills,
19. Online and self-directed study teaching development skills,
20. Evidence of academic standing,
21. Experience of speaking in public, including lectures or conferences,
22. Experience of developing learning and assessment materials,
23. Experience of assessment,
24. Experience of working in dispersed team,
25. Experience of working to deadlines.

Qualifications

Essential:

33. Holds an MBBS degree or equivalent. Holds an MBBS degree or equivalent,
34. Licensed and currently practising medical practitioner,
35. IT skills including experience of MS Office.

Desirable:

36. Possesses a further teaching qualification, such as the Certificate in Clinical Education, a Trainer’s qualification, or a further degree.
