These roles are replacement roles within the Academy of the Great Western Hospital with a focus on Undergraduate Medical Education. As a Trust, we place high importance on staff wellbeing, and you will be offered a wide variety of support to help you maintain your wellbeing and to help colleagues maintain theirs. The Trust's Health and Wellbeing team has won a National Award in 2020 for their local work.
These posts (table 1) are aimed at post-foundation year doctors who wish to work in a medical educational role at The Academy in Swindon, collaborating with medical students from the University of Bristol (UoB), Oxford (UoO), and King's College London (KCL).
The posts are suitable for doctors planning a break before higher medical training, those wishing to take a year out of their training program (subject to approval by the relevant training program director), or doctors interested in an academic career pursuing a higher degree such as an MSc or MD. These roles comprise an educational component (80%) delivered at the Academy and a supernumerary clinical component in the NHS Trust (20%), or alternatively, a 50% clinical and 50% educational ward-based role as detailed below.
Candidates may apply for both the office-based Clinical Teaching Fellow posts and the ward-based teaching roles, indicating their preferences if successful.
Main duties of the job
The duties outlined below are not exhaustive and may be adjusted according to service needs.
1. The CTFs will work daily with the Academy Undergraduate Manager, administrators, and the UC/UTs responsible for organizing the formal teaching program and clinical placements. They will ensure that teaching sessions are properly scheduled and delivered.
2. Regular communication with UC/UTs and among CTFs is essential. Formal meetings will be held throughout the year to review and plan the course. Each CTF will develop and utilize an individual or group Outlook Calendar for this purpose.
3. An Office-Based CTF is expected to work 40 hours per week, from 09:00 to 17:00, with one day allocated to a clinical specialty. Flexibility is acknowledged due to variable workload. Ward-Based CTFs rotating through ED and/or ITU (6-12 months) will typically work alternating weeks of clinical and Academy duties, including some weekends.
4. Student presence in the Academy is seasonal; therefore, educational activities should be averaged over the year, considering periods of increased or decreased activity.
