Principal Designer - CDM & Building Regulations
Location: Multiple Yorkshire Locations | Hybrid Working Available
An established, multi-disciplinary construction consultancy is looking to appoint an experienced and driven Principal Designer to join their growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with a strong grounding in both CDM and Building Regulations to work across a varied and high-profile project portfolio, delivering compliance and advisory services to a wide-ranging client base.
The Role
You will take a leading role in providing both CDM Principal Designer services and Building Regulations compliance support across a variety of sectors, including commercial, healthcare, education, defence and residential. Working closely with clients, design teams and contractors, you will ensure that health, safety and regulatory obligations are embedded throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Produce and review Pre-Construction Information, Design Risk Registers, Construction Phase Plans and Health & Safety Files
Provide clear guidance to clients, designers and contractors on their duties under the CDM Regulations 2015
Support clients in navigating Building Regulations compliance, advising on regulatory submissions, gateway processes and the requirements of the Building Safety Act 2022
Act as Principal Designer under both CDM and, where applicable, Building Regulations frameworks
Chair Design Team Meetings to ensure design risks and compliance considerations are captured and managed effectively
Review RAMS and develop Risk Assessments tailored to client requirements
Carry out site safety visits and produce detailed reports, including corrective action trackers
Prepare clear, client-facing project reports and compliance documentation
Attend site and project meetings, representing the consultancy professionally
Develop your consultancy expertise in line with evolving regulation and client needs
What We're Looking For
CMaPS qualified or actively working towards this accreditation; APS membership strongly preferred
IOSH membership desirable
Sound knowledge of the CDM Regulations 2015 and demonstrable experience acting as Principal Designer and/or CDM Advisor
Good understanding of the Building Regulations process, including knowledge of the Building Safety Act 2022 and gateway regime
Experience of working across multiple sectors and project types
Strong project management skills, with the ability to identify client needs and deliver practical, tailored solutions
Capable of communicating regulatory requirements clearly to stakeholders at all levels
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, with a confident and professional approach
Logical, practically minded, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Full UK driving licence
