NUH is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated 4 Trust Grade doctor at ST3 level or above to join our neurosurgical department. This initial 12-month placement may be extended.
This role offers excellent experience in neurosurgery. The post holder will be part of a team comprising run-through trainees and other trust grade doctors, working closely with consultants, junior doctors, and multidisciplinary teams. The position involves participation in the on-call rota at QMC.
Opportunities for work-based assessments will be provided by supervising consultants, and a Clinical Supervisor will assist in identifying career progression opportunities.
Requirements include previous neurosurgery registrar experience (or equivalent), full MRCS, and NHS experience. The role involves supporting various aspects of a busy service, including ward rounds, clinics, pre-admissions, and theatre duties, allocated weekly, with a commitment to the out-of-hours rota.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Providing inpatient and outpatient services (theatres and clinics) under consultant supervision.
2. Contributing to the emergency out-of-hours rota.
3. Supervising daily ward rounds.
4. Managing patient care as per consultant plans.
5. Supporting and teaching junior colleagues.
6. Participating in M&M and MDT meetings.
7. Contributing to Quality & Improvement Projects.
8. Attending departmental meetings.
The QMC Neurosurgery department is one of the busiest in the country, providing adult and paediatric services to a regional population of approximately 3.5 million across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Lincolnshire.
Led by 14 consultants, the department performs around 2000 neurosurgical procedures annually, covering all major subspecialties. It is a vital part of the East Midlands trauma service and major trauma unit, with four modern theatres and access to an emergency theatre daily. The department is equipped with advanced neuro-navigation systems, intraoperative ultrasound, 5-ALA, ICG microscopes, endoscopes, and a state-of-the-art intraoperative MRI, supporting high-quality care for both adult and paediatric tumour patients. Nottingham University Hospitals' brain tumour centre is recognized as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence.
