Job Summary
As an engineering manager, you will lead a team of technical experts to provide high quality engineering design and support at all stages of the development process. The role ranges from initial viability advice and design to design development, gaining technical consents and providing advice to all other departments as well as key subcontractors.
Primary Responsibilities
* Instruct, manage and review all engineering aspects of the land appraisal process to inform project viability from the outset.
* Resolve critical issues as part of the Taylor Wimpey planning application process.
* Manage consultants in road, sewer, levels, cut and fill designs to satisfy planning whilst maintaining the most competitive and practical solution.
* Co‑coordinate and manage key relationships with utility companies, highways authorities, water companies and the Environment Agency on engineering matters.
* Work closely and collaboratively with other disciplines throughout: Land, Commercial, Design & Planning.
* Ensure compliance with building regulations and NHBC Standards.
* Procure technical approval for highways, sewerage, land drainage, utilities.
* Actively seek to value engineer proposals and ensure the most cost‑effective designs are progressed.
* Implement a high level of CDM, identifying foreseeable risks in designs and taking action to design risk out, in line with company policy.
* Discharge the designers’ responsibilities under CDM regulations.
* Manage members of the engineering team at all levels and overall management of the bonds database.
* Attend relevant meetings associated with land bids and appraisals and oversee the engineering process.
* Other duties as required.
Experience, Qualifications, Technical Requirements
* Extensive experience of engineering issues gained within the housebuilding industry (roads, sewers, foundations, land drainage, utilities).
* Previous experience leading a team of engineers.
* Engineering related qualification, degree or equivalent—ideally accredited by the Institution for Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or Institute of Chartered Engineers (ICE).
* High level of proficiency in AutoCAD, PDS, Windes, Microdrainage and IT/computer literacy.
* Ability to undertake civil engineering design in-house and to manage and assess external designs.
* Thorough and up‑to‑date knowledge of technical and regulatory requirements related to residential construction.
* Ability to interpret geotechnical and environmental reports and make suitable recommendations.
* Thorough knowledge of assessment of ground conditions for foundation and sub‑structure design.
* Ability to create value from design and understand the impact of design changes on the business.
