Commercial Manager
The successful candidate must have experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Manager within the utilities, high voltage power, electricity, or renewable energy sectors. A full UK driving licence is required, along with willingness to travel if necessary. The role offers a highly attractive permanent salary and benefits package, including a fully expensed company car or car allowance, 10% bonus, pension, healthcare scheme, and some hybrid working. The position requires commuting to our client’s Northeast and Northwest offices.
This Commercial Manager role involves leading the management of contractual and financial risks during the early stages of construction project bids, providing commercial and contractual guidance during preconstruction feasibility, and managing costs throughout infrastructure projects during in-situ and close-out phases.
The Role
1. Ensure the preparation of contract documents for civil and HV electrical engineering works, including bills of quantities and cost analysis, with monthly updates.
2. Establish client requirements with project and design teams, and present proposals to the Senior Board for approval.
3. Manage pre-contract services, providing consistent cost plans and budgets via the commercial team.
4. Ensure contractual arrangements are followed and variations are managed efficiently.
5. Collaborate with delivery teams to understand project requirements and manage contract administration.
6. Produce monthly performance reports on key measures, risks, and opportunities.
7. Interpret pre-contract information to assess potential bid risks.
8. Forecast and control project spend under NEC Contracts in the utilities sector.
9. Implement and uphold commercial practices aligned with company processes.
10. Identify risks, propose mitigations, and administer in line with company procedures.
11. Evaluate supply chain tenders to ensure cost-effective solutions.
12. Provide financial data to meet performance targets.
13. Drive continuous improvement in commercial contract management, aligning with business plans.
14. Manage and deliver commercial processes, leading the team accordingly.
15. Ensure high-level commercial assurance in post-contract services.
16. Manage framework contractors and ensure their compliance with processes.
17. Maintain adherence to HSE standards, ensuring a safe working environment.
18. Develop effective supply chain management structures with relevant teams.
The Person
* Experience working with NEC 4 PFC and ECC Contracts as a Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Manager.
* Experience within the utility or HV electrical industry.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret numerical data for reports.
* Knowledge of other contract types including NEC, IET, and JCT.
* Experience in cost reporting, project management compliance, cost control, and forecasting.
* Proven track record managing high-value, multi-disciplinary projects.
* Experience in tender analysis and identifying ambiguities.
* Experience working with framework contracts.
* A degree in a relevant quantity surveying or commercial discipline is preferable, with at least five years of relevant experience.
* MRICS qualification is preferable or working towards an equivalent professional qualification.
