NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Registrar

Job overview

Applications are welcomed for the position of Cardiology Speciality Registrar at University Hospitals Plymouth - This is a 12 month role with the opportunity for the right candidate to progress to TAVI fellow after 12 months

The South West Cardiothoracic Centre opened in November 1997. It is the tertiary referral centre for cardiothoracic services for Devon and Cornwall. This state of the art building was opened in 2007 (The Terence Lewis Building), with integrated cardiology, card io thoracic and vascular surgery, intensive care and anaesthetic departments.

Over 118 beds are dedicated solely to the service, supporting activity of approximately 200 ablation procedures, 850 PCI cases and 1300 cardiac surgery procedures through four operating theatres, two digital flat plate catheter laboratories and a pacing lab.

There are 8 interventional cardiologists providing the PCI service, including 24/7 primary PCI. We undertake approximately 800 PCI procedures per year. The vast majority of diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheters are performed radially. Adjunctive technologies we employ include pressure wire assessment, intra-coronary imaging with IVUS and OCT, and rotational atherectomy. As a cardiothoracic centre for the region we take on complex and high risk PCI procedures. Such procedures include unprotected left main stem PCI, bifurcation PCI, graft vessel PCI and CTO PCI (both antegrade and retrograde approaches).
