The role

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

We have an exciting new development for Health Care Support Workers to join the team supporting individuals referred to Police Custody Health Care (PCHC).

The role of the Healthcare Support Worker is to support healthcare staff to deliver care in line with the standards and policies of healthcare provision in the NHS/PCHC.

The role involves assisting healthcare professionals to ensure that the physical environment is safe, clean, comfortable and suitable for the person referred for care, and contributes to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the person by being an active and supporting member of the team.

This is a diverse role which involves the day‑to‑day delivery of a high standard of support to the PCHC team to enable healthcare to be delivered to a population who may have a comprehensive range of physical, psychological, substance misuse and social problems, while maintaining a high level of awareness and compliance with security procedures within the PCHC environment.

Applicants will have completed SVQIII in healthcare or equivalent experience gained working in a caring environment/role; be competent in the use of computerised information systems including MS Office and have well‑developed communication skills both written and oral. As the role is covering a peripatetic and regional service a driving licence is required.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

* Permanent part‑time post of 17.4 hours per week
* Location based in Govan Police Station
* The shift pattern is 24 hours, 7 days a week.


Key responsibilities

The post‑holder:

* will work as part of the multi‑disciplinary team, working the rostered shift pattern and will be responsible for supporting the delivery of care to persons referred in PCHC
* will be responsible to their direct nurse line manager is responsible for undertaking duties/tasks as allocated and instructed by the shift coordinator
* is required to utilise available resources to maximum effect whilst effectively meeting the essential demands of patient care and service delivery
* is required to support the data input and audit processes within the service ensuring continuous development to meet ongoing needs of the PCHC service


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

* SVQIII in healthcare or equivalent experience gained working in a caring environment/role
* Competent in the use of computerised information systems including MS Office
* Well‑developed communication skills both written and oral
* Ability to effectively meet the demands of a challenging workload
* Ability to work with people as part of a multidisciplinary team
* The ability to prioritise assigned workload

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part‑time working hours will be reduced on a pro‑rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
