The role:

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a Skilled Worker visa or a Health and Care Worker visa. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is unable to provide candidates or employees with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

The Nursing Auxiliary carries out direct patient care in support of, and supervised by, a Registered Nurse.


The purpose of the care is to:

* To assist in an effective delivery of nursing care for patients and that an acceptable standard is maintained while awaiting discharge and transfer within the Discharge Lounge
* Provide, through Divisional policies and procedures, a safe and supportive environment for patients


Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

* We are seeking a highly motivated person to be part of the Discharge Team GG&C working in the Discharge Lounges
* This is a board wide post
* There are two posts available, one part-time and one full-time
* One post is 22 hours per week and one is 37 hours per week
* Hours will be flexible to meet the service requirements
* The Discharge Lounge is open from 08:00 to 20:00, Monday to Friday including Public Holidays
* Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours


Key responsibilities:

* Assist patients with activities of daily living
* Assist the Registered Nurse and where appropriate other members of the team to deliver patient care
* Assist the Registered Nurse in maximising bed utilisation by freeing up beds earlier in the day to facilitate admissions, both elective and emergency
* Co-operate with and maintain good relationships with other personnel such as Portering Staff, Pharmacy & ward Staff to maximise patient care.
* Maintain good relationships with Scottish Ambulance Service
* Assist with Generic duties as required by the service such as, transfer of patients, collecting discharge drugs from pharmacy etc
* Report observed changes in the clients needs
* Work within Divisional policies and procedures to ensure maintenance of safe working practices for patients and colleagues
* Adhere to unit procedures for the use of supplies and equipment in order to promote the effective and efficient use of resources
* Share responsibilities for key aspects of housekeeping and stock control. Demonstrating a good awareness of cost efficiency and thus contributing to the smooth running of the discharge lounge
* Participate in personal career development plan to develop and maintain skills and personal growth through training and education
* Adhere to the organisations Infection Control Policies and Procedures and act as a role model in the maintenance of a safe environment
* Maintain patient confidentiality and dignity at all times


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

* Caring disposition preferably with experience working in a caring environment/role
* Ability to work with diverse groups of people and as part of a team
* Effective written and verbal communication skills/literacy/ numeracy skills
* Ability to carry out assigned tasks effectively in a busy environment
* Ability to fulfil the requirement of the job description

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
