Social Emotional and Mental Health Support – Youth Worker
Social, Emotional and Mental Health Support – Youth Mentor
Milk Education are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Youth Mentor to work in a school setting in the Cramlington area.
This role is strongly rooted in social, emotional, and mental health support and is ideal for psychology graduates or individuals looking to gain hands-on, in-person experience. You will be supporting children and young people who may have experienced school exclusion, lived in residential care, or not had consistent opportunities to build strong, trusting relationships with adults.
Many pupils within the school also have SEND diagnoses, including Autism and ADHD. The school offers specialist support for these students, and you will work alongside experienced staff to help meet individual needs using structured, nurturing, and trauma-informed approaches.
As a Youth Mentor, you will support pupils whose experiences and additional needs may present as challenging behaviour within the classroom. You will work one-to-one and in small groups, helping students to regulate emotions, build positive relationships, and re-engage with learning. This role offers valuable experience working closely with vulnerable children in a supportive educational environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Support students with social, emotional, behavioural, and additional learning needs in one-to-one and small group settings
2. Assist with the development and delivery of individual behaviour and support plans
3. Use relationship-based approaches to promote emotional regulation and classroom engagement
4. Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams to monitor progress and adapt support
5. Implement strategies to support behaviour, communication, and emotional wellbeing
6. Maintain accurate records and communicate effectively with school staff and families
7. Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
Desirable Skills and Experience:
8. Experience working with children or young people in schools, care, or support settings
9. An understanding of SEND, including Autism and ADHD, and how this can impact behaviour and learning
10. Knowledge of child development and the impact of trauma and attachment difficulties
11. Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships
12. Patience, empathy, and resilience when supporting challenging behaviour
13. A background or qualification in psychology, education, youth work, or a related field is desirable but not essential
