Job Overview
An opportunity has arisen in Histopathology, as part of Derbyshire Pathology, for an Expert Biomedical Scientist (BMS) with proven experience in laboratory leadership and Histopathology dissection. This senior role is integral to delivering a high‑quality diagnostic service that supports timely and accurate patient care across the Trust.
As a senior Biomedical Scientist in dissection, you will independently perform complex specimen cut‑up, contribute to service development, and work closely with the Senior Biomedical Scientist team in laboratory leadership. You will also provide specialist support, training, and mentorship to colleagues, ensuring that best practice, quality standards, and regulatory requirements are met.
The Histopathology Department is based at Royal Derby Hospital and operates an extended day and week shift system. The service is progressing through laboratory transformation, including full digitisation of Histopathology.
Derby has been at the forefront of BMS dissection since 2005, with a well‑established in‑house training and competency programme, pioneering extended BMS dissection and BMS reporting.
Experience in line management and team leadership is essential, as you will be expected to manage and develop staff within your section and work with the Histology Manager and other Expert BMSs to deliver a high‑quality, efficient, and unified Histology service.
Main duties of the job
Leading within Histology, therefore familiarisation, understanding and experience of UKAS standards is essential; Health & Safety requirements; NEQAS, audit and training/education experience is also required. Familiarisation of LIMS implementation is desirable.
Experience of utilising lean methodologies to drive change and improve service is desirable. Candidates should be proactive, self‑motivated, and enthusiastic. Excellent communication, organisation and leadership skills are essential.
* To support the Quality Assurance / Training programmes alongside the Histology Manager and Cellular Pathology Service Manager
* Supervise, train and develop laboratory staff
* Participate in other sections of the Histology service when required
* Work with team leaders to develop staff to meet team objectives
* Delegated responsibility for the day to day management of the laboratory functions in an effective and efficient way ensuring the area works within the Standard Operating Procedures laid down by senior management

Education, Training & Qualifications
* HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
* Diploma of Expert Practice
* MSc Biomedical Science
* Evidence of CPD meeting HCPC/IBMS requirements.
Experience & Knowledge
* Competence in macroscopic examination and dissection of a wide range of surgical specimens (within scope of practice).
* Understanding of RCPath tissue pathways, specimen triage, and clinical relevance of sampling.
* Proven experience supervising or coordinating a team in a technical, clinical, or laboratory environment.
* Experience managing rotas, workload planning, and maintaining service levels.
* Demonstrated ability to handle staff concerns, conflict resolution, and maintain a positive team culture.
Skills & Ability
* Ability to ensure compliance with UKAS and regulatory standards.
* Teaching and training both healthcare scientists and medical staff.
* Full understanding of laboratory health and safety.
* Ability to produce accurate documentation, reports, and traceability records.
* Strong organisational skills to manage workload and maintain turnaround times.
