Job Title: Autism-Aware Teaching Assistant

Do you have a calm, patient approach and a genuine interest in supporting children with Autism? We’re working with a specialist school in Peterlee that provides tailored education for pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and additional learning needs. They’re looking for an Autism-Aware Teaching Assistant to join their dedicated team.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about inclusion and enjoys helping pupils build confidence, communication, and independence.
What you’ll be doing:
1. Supporting pupils with Autism across a range of classroom and community activities
2. Assisting with structured routines and visual supports such as timetables, Now and Then boards, and communication aids
3. Encouraging pupils’ social and emotional development through positive relationships and consistent support
4. Helping to create calm, predictable environments that reduce anxiety and promote engagement
5. Working closely with teachers and therapists to deliver tailored learning plans
We’d love to hear from you if you:
6. Have experience or training related to Autism or special educational needs (professional or personal experience welcome)
7. Are patient, empathetic, and skilled at using clear, consistent communication
8. Understand the importance of visual structure, sensory regulation, and predictable routines
9. Have a flexible, solution-focused approach and enjoy working as part of a supportive team
10. Hold a UK driving licence and have access to a car (preferred but not essential)
