Social Worker – Leaving & Aftercare Team, Mid Essex
Fixed term contract (up to 12 months). Full time. Salary £38,487 – £51,834 per annum. Location: Chelmsford. Working style: community‑based worker.
The Opportunity
Leaving & Aftercare teams focus on young people aged 16‑25 who are in or have left care. The role requires managing a defined caseload, assessing risk, implementing direct relationship‑based interventions, and reviewing outcomes. You will collaborate with partners delivering early help and family support, promoting resilience and a brighter future for young people.
Accountabilities
* Assess complex social care needs and provide support to children and families.
* Develop support plans that commit to solutions enabling young people and families to build resilience.
* Work within the statutory legal framework, policy, and guidance, determining when statutory intervention thresholds are reached.
* Collaborate to build effective relationships with internal and external partners, stakeholders, and voluntary sector organisations.
* Conduct assessments and plan responses to safeguard children or young people, promoting their welfare and providing appropriate interventions.
* Implement a child‑centred approach to enable early intervention, prevention, and increased independence.
* Proactively influence inter‑agency planning, decision‑making, and case discussions.
* Communicate assessments and professional judgments clearly in writing and orally, including report writing and court statements.
* Work with families, communities, and individuals to help people get the best start in life and age well, supporting strategic aims.
Experience and Qualifications
* Recognised social work qualification (Diploma, degree, Masters, CQSW, CSS, or equivalent) and current registration with Social Work England.
* Evidence of continuing professional development aligned to relevant competency frameworks.
* Experience within a social work setting handling challenging social and family situations.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to develop rapport and engage with diverse groups.
* Ability to build strong relationships with partners and agencies to achieve joint objectives.
* Understanding of providing value‑for‑money interventions balanced against need.
* Clear decision‑making skills to identify and limit risks associated with intervention.
Travel & Mobility
The role requires mobility across Essex and beyond, including emergency travel. A driving licence and a car or equivalent mobility means are essential.
