Consultant in Acute Medicine
We are currently recruiting Consultants in Acute Medicine. The Acute care Consultant is pivotal in the department offering both clinical and team leadership. You will work as part of a team comprising Higher Specialty trainees, Middle Grades, ACPs, Junior Doctors (GPVTS, FY2s, FY1s) and a skilled nursing team.
Key Considerations
Those consultants who have specialist training in another specialty and have an interest in Acute medicine will also be considered. We especially welcome those with a specialist interest in ultrasound‑guided procedures, ITU or Respiratory Medicine, as we are developing an enhanced care unit in AMU. Candidates wishing to develop their specialty interest alongside Acute medicine will receive career support.

What We Ask From You

Main Duties
The working week for a full‑time Consultant is comprised of 10 Programmed Activities, including Acute on‑call weekends. Typically, a consultant will spend 7.5 PAs on Direct Clinical Care (this includes 0.5 PA for clinical and educational supervision and prospective cover). The acute medical team works on a rotational basis covering Ward 29 – Short Stay, AMU and Ambulatory Care.

* Rota management, Mortality Review and Mentorship
* Additional lead areas (as a newly appointed Consultant) – Lead for IT development

Responsibilities
* Definitive care of patient attendances and admissions
* Lead the delivery of high‑quality acute medical intervention in all Acute areas, continuously developing practice based on evidence‑based clinical standards
* Provide a comprehensive medical service to AMU and A&E and develop comprehensive plans for patient care during the acute phase, actively managing all unscheduled emergency medical admissions to the Trust
* Assist in admission avoidance and early safe discharge strategies of the Trust
* Lead and direct the AMU to reform emergency medical patient management, establishing links with GPs and other consultant staff
* Monitor the delivery of emergency medical care to ensure high‑quality, evidence‑based care at all times
* Ensure safe, high‑quality acute medical intervention, including procedures required for patients, responsive and in line with best practice
* Support the teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students and postgraduate medical education
* Support and encourage audit and research quality improvement programmes

Essential Qualifications
* Basic Medical degree
* Full MRCP or equivalent
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (Proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), European Community Rights or CESR
* Current ALS qualification (within the last 3 years, or obtainable within 3 months of appointment)
Essential Clinical Experience
* Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Medicine
* Broad experience in Acute Medicine
Professional and Multi‑disciplinary Team Working
* Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and within a multi‑disciplinary team
* Ability to develop effective working relationships at all levels of staff
Clinical Effectiveness
* Experience of conducting clinical audit/ QI projects
* Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision‑making, prompt decision making and handle complaints
Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience
* Ability to teach clinical skills to medical staff, students and other disciplines
* An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly reforms, initiatives and issues
* Evidence of research experience and published work
