An exciting opportunity has arisen within Health and Justice Services for a Speech and Language Therapist to work within the HMP Northumberland Mental Health Team. The service provides assessment and treatment for people who are within the prison setting.
Main duties of the job
* Provide assessment and intervention with individuals with speech, language, and communication needs, including swallowing issues.
* Work as an integral part of the Prison Mental Health team.
* Provide communication advice and strategies to individuals and their supporters in relevant formats.
* Raise awareness and improve the workforce’s knowledge and skills in speech, language and communication needs.
* Provide relevant and meaningful therapy input where appropriate.
Objectives
* Provide an exemplary and comprehensive assessment of speech, language and communication needs for all eligible referred individuals.
* Work as an integrated multi‑disciplinary team.
* Operate within a robust clinical operating framework.
* Provide high‑quality advice to key agencies and prison teams, including mental health, staff, Prisoner Officers, Alcohol and Drug Recovery agencies, Education and Employment services, and Probation.
Person Specification
Experience
* Minimum 12 months post‑qualifying experience of Speech and Language Therapy delivery.
* Experience supporting people with mental health issues, learning disability or autism.
* Experience working in a multidisciplinary team.
Qualifications
* Appropriate professional qualification in Speech and Language Therapy.
* Current relevant registration with specific regulatory body.
* Post‑graduate training in relevant specialist area.
Knowledge
* Understanding of the needs of service users with mental health conditions or learning disabilities.
* Knowledge of evidence‑based practice in designated specialist area.
* Awareness of professional standards and their application to practice.
