Overview

This role is based in Sydney, Australia and is a full‑time, fixed‑term (18‑month) position within the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of New South Wales. The candidate will work in the ARC Training Centre for Automated Manufacture of Advanced Composites (AMAC) to conduct research in the structural health monitoring of metallic and composite structures produced through advanced automated manufacturing processes.


Responsibilities

* Develop and conduct research on structural health monitoring of metallic and composite structures.
* Write scientific papers and reports for international journals and conferences.
* Participate in conferences, workshops and other academic events.
* Supervise HDR students and collaborate closely with academic and industry partners.
* Engage with industry partners to support the delivery of high‑impact research outcomes.


Salary

* Research Associate (Level A) – AUD $113,911 to $121,838 per annum + 17% superannuation
* Senior Research Associate (Level B, Step 1) – AUD $127,947 per annum + 17% superannuation
* Full time, fixed‑term contract – 18 months
* Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia


Qualifications – Research Associate (Level A)

* PhD (or soon to be awarded) in Materials, Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline.
* Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
* Sound understanding of engineering design fundamentals and properties of materials and composites.
* Relevant work experience in modelling and simulation of metallic and composite structures.
* Experience in composites manufacturing, testing, and data analysis.
* Track record of publications and conference presentations.
* Experience contributing to proposals for competitive external funding.
* Ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse stakeholders.
* Commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values.
* Ability to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.


Qualifications – Senior Research Associate (Level B)

* PhD in a directly relevant area (e.g., Manufacturing, Mechanical, Aerospace, Robotics Engineering).
* Sound understanding of engineering design fundamentals and properties of materials and composites.
* Relevant work experience in modelling and simulation of metallic and composite structures.
* Experience in composites manufacturing, testing, and data analysis.
* Track record of publications and conference presentations.
* Extensive experience translating research results into practical outcomes.
* Success in attracting research funding from governmental and/or industrial sectors.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to network effectively.
* Experience supervising research students.
* Collaboration with industry partners on research projects.
* Ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.
* Willingness to undertake required compliance and supervisor training.
* Commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values.
* Knowledge of health & safety responsibilities and commitment to training.
