Job overview

This is an exciting role which will offer candidates the opportunity to continue to work in a clinical environment whilst also developing their research skills. The post holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team including experienced clinical and research staff, taking part in a wide range of clinical research studies. The role responsibilities will include the delivery and administration of systemic anti-cancer therapies and investigational research treatments, whilst collaborating with the research teams to ensure studies are conducted to the highest ethical and safety standards.

The roles are patient facing and the successful applicants will be able to make a valued contribution in assessing and managing the care pathways for patients participating in research. Prior experience of administering chemotherapy and other anti-cancer therapies is essential.

Experience of working in a research environment is desirable but we will offer candidates a comprehensive training program, therefore encourage applications from experienced chemotherapy nurses with a passion to work in research.

Main duties of the job

1. To autonomously work with the clinical team to identify and recruit patients suitable for entry into clinical trials having understanding of the clinical patient pathway
2. To ensure safe planning and care of patients according to the clinical trials protocol.
3. To work in according to good clinical practice and research governance standards for clinical research studies.
4. To recognise and act on concerns raised if research deviates from the study protocol or the study design conflicts with legal requirements.
5. Capture all data as per clinical trial protocol and GCP requirements
6. Assist with timely completion of SUSARs, SAEs and AEs as per CTU guidelines and clinical trial protocol requirements.
7. Keep up to date with current developments in nursing and research and ensure evidence based practice.
8. Maintain an awareness of changes within the Health Service and the implications of these for nursing and research staff.
9. To be aware of and take appropriate action, in regard to cardiac arrest, fire and major incident.

Person specification

Education/ qualifications

Essential criteria

10. Registered Nurse
11. Relevant degree
12. Accredited chemotherapy administration certificate/Course
13. Mentorship course/ Teaching qualification or equivalent experience

Desirable criteria

14. Qualifications in Cancer / Haematology Nursing
15. Qualifications in clinical research.
16. Completed GCP training

Experience

Essential criteria

17. Relevant clinical experience within Haematology/Oncology
18. Experience of working within NHS environment and with service users
19. Experience in the administration of SACT and research treatments

Desirable criteria

20. Experience of working with clinical trial patients
21. Knowledge of informed consent process in clinical trials.
22. Good understanding of clinical trial regulations (e.g. ICH GCP)

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential criteria

23. Competency in medication administration including IV medications and chemotherapy
24. Competency in phlebotomy and cannulation
25. Advanced computer skills, including all MS applications, the internet, and online databases
26. Able to prioritise and meet deadlines

Desirable criteria

27. Knowledge of clinical research methodology and trial design.
