Overview

Twinkl Digest is Twinkl’s online education magazine. Over the last 12 months we have increased our readership from 52,000 readers per month to over 160,000 readers; making us one of the largest and fastest-growing education magazines in the UK.

We are seeking to appoint a driven Editor-in-Chief to serve as the strategic and editorial leader of our online and physical magazine. You will support our editorial team on the next exciting phase of our transformational journey, serving the education community. The Editor-in-Chief will also be responsible for the creation and execution of a comprehensive strategy for growing Digest’s readership and influence. You will uphold the ethical framework for editorial, in line with media law and Twinkl values.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of online magazine and print magazine leadership within education, with a thorough understanding of the school/trust landscape in England.

Key Responsibilities

The Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for the following key areas:


* Editorial: responsible for journalism across all platforms, overseeing the commissioning, editing and production of all content. Setting the ethical framework for editorial, in line with media law and Twinkl values.
* Strategic: setting the editorial course for Twinkl Digest over the short, medium and long term. Collaborating with commercial and technology teams to ensure digital and financial opportunities are explored and acting on. Bring a sophisticated understanding of online publishing to the role in order to ensure that all strategies utilise new technologies to innovate where appropriate. Continuing to grow readership through content, visual design and technology strategies.
* Commercial: helping to identify, create and realise new revenue streams, collaborating closely with commercial and technical teams. Continuing the growth of Twinkl membership through relevant strategy development and marketing. Taking an active role in marketing Twinkl Digest, working closely with internal marketing and brand teams, external marketing companies and through thought leadership.
* External: the editor-in-chief will be a public face of Twinkl Digest, responding to Digest journalism, making public appearances and speaking at conferences. They will be required to represent Twinkl Digest in the media, with government bodies, regulatory bodies and the public.
* Leadership: responsible for attracting, developing and retaining editorial talent. Line management of editorial staff.

Requirements:

* Experience creating and executing on the strategy of an online magazine or print magazine, in the UK education sector.
* Journalism degree or equivalent.
* Experience managing the P&L of a digital publication.
* Minimum of 7 years journalism experience (5 or more in senior editorial roles).
* Strong grasp of UK media law.
* Demonstrated experience in navigating breaking sector news and public interest.
* Ability to align editorial direction and investment with wider business strategy and goals.
* In-depth understanding of the England education market (B2C/B2B), with insights into policy, curriculum requirements, and public-sector education strategies and experience/understanding of how to market B2C/B2B to this sector.
* Strong edtech knowledge and skills linked to the online publishing industry.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across different teams and levels of the organisation.
* Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively to innovate in order to drive readership, retention and community engagement.
* Alignment with Twinkl’s core values and leadership approach.

KPIs

* Increase readership in UKI by 70% (incl downloads and digital products)
* Meet UK acquisition and retention targets (FT, new sales, upgrades, winbacks, retention…)
* Increase Twinkl's brand recognition, consideration, and preference (SoV, brand search volume, ER, NPS…)
