Overview

If you love meeting new people and want to support people affected by dementia in your area, then we may have just the volunteer role for you! As a Group Support Volunteer, you'll support and encourage people affected by dementia to engage in activities and socialise with others in a group setting. A friendly face at the group, you'll welcome and talk to people affected by dementia to help them feel comfortable and make sure they're offered refreshments. You'll also help set up and tidy away at the end of the group. Your involvement in this role will ensure people affected by dementia are able to meet others in a similar situation, access the support and information they need and enjoy meaningful activities. This role is to support our Activity Group at Whiston Town Hall, Old Colliery Road, L35 3QX. We meet fortnightly on a Wednesday afternoon from 1pm - 3pm. We are looking for someone to join our team who is happy to engage with people living with dementia and their carers to support them to get the most out of our exercise and other activities.


Responsibilities

* Setting up the venue and preparing activities.
* Meeting, greeting and helping attendees settle in when they arrive.
* Preparing refreshments.
* Supporting service users throughout the sessions, encouraging participation in activities, and interacting with carers and people living with dementia.
* Helping staff to tidy up after the group session.
* Supporting with evaluation of the group.
* Completing basic training as required, including annual updates.

You will need to be confident in being able to approach and interact with attendees, welcoming them with a smile, and making conversation. Enthusiasm is a must, as our activity groups are all about getting involved and trying new things. If you have any hobbies or talents that are appropriate for our group we would be happy for you to contribute to the planning of activities and lead them too! You will be a key part of our team and other opportunities for learning and volunteering will be available to you.


Qualifications / Requirements

* You have good verbal communication and listening skills
* You enjoy meeting new people and being part of a team
* You are aware of or are willing to learn about dementia and its impact on people
* You can demonstrate empathy and compassion
* You are over the age of 16
