Bedmax Shavings is a small family run company, the first in the UK to make made-to-measure, high-quality shavings especially for horse bedding. Starting in 2000, we now have six products in our range including a heat log. The company was founded, and is still based near Belford, in Northumberland, with important dedicated manufacturing plants in Nottinghamshire and Hampshire.
We are currently recruiting for an assistant factory manager to work alongside an experienced manager at our manufacturing plant near Newark, Nottinghamshire. The successful candidate will undergo a staged induction before taking full responsibility for staff, operations, and assets, driving efficiency and process improvements.
Some managerial experience is desirable - a strong willingness to develop is key.
The fully trained manager will:
General
* Achieve required physical and financial performance targets for production and distribution.
* Promote a good stable working atmosphere and gain the confidence of staff and employees at all levels.
* Maintain up-to-date operational procedures for all production and maintenance activities.
* Work closely with the engineer to ensure site is maintained in a safe, tidy and secure state.
* Monitor the performance, quality and efficiency levels to ensure they adhere to company standards and expectations.
* Report the factory's performances regularly and accurately, together with other matters of importance, to the Bedmax Production Manager and Managing Directorin whatever form they may require.
* Maintain good communication with both on site admin and the wider administration team
Health & Safety
* Liaise with Compliance Manager to ensure that Health & Safety is always a major concern on the site.
* Ensure Health & Safety procedures are up-to-date for the site and all its activities and ensure that these procedures are adhered to and monitored by all the staff.
* Hold monthly Health & Safety meetings and undertake regular Health & Safety audit spot checks
* Take whatever measures are necessary to improve Health & Safety when shortcomings are identified.
* Ensure all safety notices and equipment are in place and being maintained.
Plant
* Ensure the plant is run in a safe manner and to its full potential.
* Appropriate maintenance is carried out on a regular basis.
* Monitor regularly to ensure there are sufficient stocks of raw materials, fuel and other consumables on site to keep the plant running whenever required, maintaining these stocks at the minimum necessary levels.
* Seek out and implement ways to achieve better operating performances
* Maintain adequate engineering stores.
* Arrange appropriate servicing of equipment maintained by external contractors, always ensuring we are getting the best service and value for money.
* Ensure that the buildings and facilities are kept in a suitable state for the plant to be able to operate safely and satisfactorily.
People
* Manage the Caunton workforce, maintaining good employee relations at all times, regularly communicating with the staff
* Promote a team working environment and encourage all employees to engage in the running of the site and its operations.
* Provide training and support where required.
* Deal promptly with any grievances
* Exercise clear and fair disciplinary action when such action is necessary, complying with Company policy and relevant legislation. All written warnings and any dismissal must receive the prior approval from Head Office.
* Ensure and maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records.
* Carry out annual appraisals of plant staff and take action when there is a need for change or development.
Quality
* Always seek to achieve the Bedmax Minimum quality standards for the Bedmax products across and take immediate and appropriate actions when quality issues are identified.
* Liaising with The Compliance Manager, ensure regular audits are undertaken on measuring techniques, Flake Thickness, Splinters, moisture, expansion ratio and packaging appearance.
Customers
* Maintain a customer-focused approach to all production and distribution activities.
* Handle any customer concerns or complaints in a courteous and considerate manner.
* Ensure you advise the Bedmax Plant Operations Manager and the sales department immediately of any customer issues relating to the site, making sure that any complaint is followed up and a satisfactory outcome has been achieved.
Suppliers
* Establish and maintain open and cordial, long term relationships with suppliers, hauliers and contractors.
* Ensure you are negotiating cost-effective supply arrangements with suppliers and contractors, subject to any arrangements negotiated centrally by the Company.
* The plant should provide suitable access facilities for suppliers, hauliers and contractors delivering to, collecting from or working on the site, this should be monitored at all times
Financial
* Be prepared to be involved in the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts for each plant for approval by the Bedmax Production Manager and the Managing Director.
* Ensure the plant maintains accurate financial records and procedures and provide information as required to the Company's financial department.
* Review financial results monthly for the plant and take any necessary steps to limit deficiencies.
Development
* Be prepared to undertake small developments to any part of the production process if it makes it safer, easier, more cost efficient or more energy efficient.
* Undertake any development initiatives as and when required by the Managing Director.
