An established automation and engineering solutions provider is seeking an Automation & Electrical Design Engineer to support the design, development, and commissioning of bespoke automation, special purpose machinery, and materials handling systems.
This is a technically varied, hands-on role covering the full project lifecycle — from initial concept and electrical design through PLC/HMI development, on-site commissioning, and customer handover. The position offers close collaboration with engineering, project, sales, and customer teams across multiple projects.
Controls & Electrical Design Engineer - The Role:
Design and develop electrical control systems for bespoke automation, special purpose machinery, and materials handling equipment
Produce compliant electrical designs and control panel layouts using Eplan
Design, develop, test, and commission PLC and HMI software for small to large-scale automation systems using Siemens TIA Portal
Develop safe, reliable control systems, including production of SISTEMA reports where required
Apply working knowledge of AC/DC motor control, variable speed drives, industrial networking, and Auto-ID systems
Provide technical input to sales and project teams, supporting delivery on time and within budget
Deliver customer training at operator and engineer level
Produce and contribute to technical documentation
Provide ongoing technical and commissioning support as required
Controls & Electrical Design Engineer - The Person:
Degree, HNC, or HND qualified in Electrical, Electronic, or Control Engineering (or equivalent experience)
3–5+ years’ post-qualification experience in electrical design and/or automation controls engineering
Strong experience with PLC, HMI, and control systems for industrial automation - Siemens TIA Portal experience is essential
Proven experience producing electrical schematics and panel designs using EPLAN
Experience generating SISTEMA safety reports
Experience with materials handling equipment, special purpose machinery, or automated systems highly desirable
Robot programming experience beneficial but not essential
Located in Staffordshire, this role would be commutable from Lichfield, Coleshill, Tamworth, Birmingham, Coventry, Walsall, Redditch, Atherstone, and surrounding areas.
