PhD Studentship: Aircraft Electrical Power System Stability
This opportunity is based within the Power Electronics and Machines Centre (PEMC) Research Group at the Faculty of Engineering, which conducts cutting-edge research into enabling technologies for future aircraft applications.
Vision:
We are seeking a motivated PhD student to conduct research in electrical power system stability for future aircraft applications. Together, we aim to make technological advances that will lead to more sustainable and safe air travel.
Motivation:
The aviation industry accounts for 12% of transport-related carbon dioxide emissions. Decarbonising aviation is crucial for achieving net zero. Hybrid and all-electric aircraft technologies offer pathways to sustainability. This project will explore approaches to achieving robust control of aircraft electrical power systems, ensuring stability across various nonlinear loads and operating conditions.
Aim:
You will research and implement innovative solutions to ensure the stability and safety of aircraft electrical power systems, collaborating with a research team focused on aircraft electrification at PEMC.
Candidate Profile:
We seek an enthusiastic, self-motivated, resourceful PhD candidate with knowledge of aircraft power systems and IT skills in MATLAB/Simulink or related software. Applicants should have or expect to achieve a 1st or 2:1 in an MEng degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
Funding Support:
The position starts on 1st October 2025, with funding available for UK home students at the current UKRI rate (tax-free stipend of £20,780 plus tuition fees).
The University promotes equality, diversity, and inclusion and encourages applications from all backgrounds.
The Faculty of Engineering offers a vibrant research environment, supporting postgraduate researchers through training, community engagement, and collaboration with industrial partners.
