Job Purpose
The successful applicant will contribute to the Institute for Gravitational Research’s (IGR) STFC-funded research in Interferometry, focusing on commissioning a cryogenic suspended interferometer prototype and laser stabilization systems. This project addresses key R&D challenges for cryogenic upgrades to ground-based gravitational wave detectors, aligning with the international LIGO Scientific Collaboration. The role involves integrating with the research team, reporting, communicating with the wider collaboration, and leading research within the theme. The candidate will develop a suspension system for silicon test mass optics at cryogenic temperatures, with low thermal noise and high seismic isolation, and will commission laser systems used with the suspended optics. Engagement with the broader research community is expected to advance understanding of these complex systems and contribute to future gravitational wave detector technology. The role requires expert knowledge of suspension and laser systems, alongside strong modeling and practical skills.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Plan and conduct research collaboratively, aligned with project goals and research strategies.
2. Contribute to the development of laser stabilization and cryogenic suspension systems for future gravitational wave detectors.
3. Lead the acquisition, commissioning, maintenance, and integration of experimental apparatus in the prototype interferometer facility.
4. Contribute to LIGO operations activities, including training and remote/on-site operations.
5. Document research findings, analyze data, maintain records, and draft reports and publications.
6. Enhance research profile through publications, collaborations, and dissemination at conferences and seminars.
7. Participate in group and wider community activities, fostering a collaborative environment.
8. Handle administrative tasks related to research activities, including budgeting.
9. Contribute to teaching activities as assigned.
10. Stay current with advances in the field and engage in professional development.
11. Undertake other duties as assigned by the Head of School or Principal Investigator.
For Grade 7 appointment:
1. Perform duties with greater independence and leadership, including mentoring and supervising students and staff.
2. Develop independent research lines and seek funding opportunities.
3. Manage safety related to laboratory and experimental activities.
