Job Title: Controls Project Engineer
Location: Hull (with occasional international travel)
Salary: £45K-65K per annum
Hours: 37 per week
Contract Type: Permanent, Full-time
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Controls Project Engineer to join a leading organisation within the automation and material handling industry.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering complete control system solutions that comply with legislation, meet company standards, and fulfil customer requirements. You will play a key technical role within project teams, occasionally acting as Design Manager or Commissioning Manager, depending on project scope and complexity.
This position requires both strong technical leadership and hands-on engineering expertise to ensure each project is delivered to the highest standards of quality, safety, and performance.
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical input during tender and sales stages, assisting with estimating and concept design
Lead the technical delivery of control system projects from design through to commissioning
Develop and maintain controls design standards and documentation
Review requirements and complete compliance matrices
Validate design solutions against customer specifications and industry standards
Support Controls Engineers in developing PLC software and troubleshooting when required
Manage and maintain all project technical documentation (including PMDRs)
Coordinate integration between electrical, mechanical, IT, and high-level control systems
Drive consistent quality improvements and manage project changes or defects
Liaise regularly with Project Managers, Design Managers, and the wider engineering team
Promote and maintain high standards of health, safety, and environmental complianceRequired Skills & Experience
Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Controls, or Automation Engineering (or proven equivalent experience)
Strong understanding of electrical principles and control systems
Significant experience in PLC hardware and software development - Siemens essential (Allen Bradley or Schneider also advantageous)
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and PLC code
Familiarity with SCADA systems, sortation equipment, RFID, and scanner integration
Good understanding of current CDM regulations
Experience in Material Handling Systems, Baggage Handling, or Intralogistics
Excellent organisational and project management skills
Confident communicator with the ability to lead technical discussions
Willingness to travel both within the UK and internationally as requiredDesirable Attributes

You'll be based primarily in the UK, working in office, airport, and industrial environments. The role may occasionally involve travel within the UK and overseas to support installations, testing, and commissioning activities.
