Description
We are seeking a Local Democracy Reporter to cover our busy Norfolk news patch. This role is central to scrutinising local councils, MPs and decision‑makers, ensuring they are held to account and that the interests of our communities are championed.
You will be based in our Norwich newsroom and will play a key part in the Eastern Daily Press (EDP) team. Although the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme is funded by the BBC, you will be employed by Newsquest. Your stories will be distributed across multiple outlets via the LDRS wire, including the BBC.
This is an opportunity for a reporter who wants to make a genuine difference, highlight issues that matter to readers, and deliver impactful journalism that informs and protects local communities.
Key Responsibilities
* Report on local councils, MPs and public bodies, holding power to account.
* Attend council and public meetings, both virtually and in person.
* Source and develop impactful stories that affect the lives of local readers.
* Monitor agendas, meetings and public documents to identify emerging issues.
* Build strong contacts across the patch, engaging directly with communities.
* Produce accurate, engaging and timely copy suitable for distribution via the LDRS wire.
* Represent the EDP and Newsquest professionally at all times.
* Travel across the Norfolk patch as required.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
* NCTJ senior qualification or trainee near completion of a Gold Standard Diploma (including 100wpm shorthand) or equivalent experience.
* Strong understanding of local government, public affairs and democratic processes.
* Proven ability to find original stories and deliver high‑impact reporting.
* Excellent news judgement, accuracy and attention to detail.
* Confident in attending and interpreting public meetings and official documents.
* Ability to build rapport with contacts and engage with the community.
* Strong digital skills and comfort working in a fast‑paced newsroom environment.
* Full driving licence is essential.
